well they work in existing conroe motherboards tho...or am i gonna get stung for yet another board upgrade?
Usually you need a new mobo because the new cpu's use a lower voltage that your older mobo cant do....but i think with new mobos doing speedstep and powernow and all that power-saving jazz....we should be ok.
if the voltages are too high, you'll just have to overclock it, to absorb the extra volts, like

That suggests a yes, but they can't guarentee it in every case without actually testing it.
Knowing the reasons Conroe's wouldn't work in earlier boards (or BadAxe at least) I'd imagine that it won't be a problem this time around.
I think there should be an article saying exactly which processors we will all be buying in a few months time: AMD Barcelona/Stars or Intel Penryn?
As has been said above there can't be any guarantees about individual boards as yet, but Intel have pretty good form as far as backwards compatibility is concerned.
Coppermines worked on Deschutes/Katmai boards, Prescotts worked on Northwood/Willamette boards. Hell, Tualatins worked on Katmai boards with some simple modifications and that's a two generation jump when you think about it.
The times there have been big problems in this area have been the occasions when the CPU package design changed, and as it doesn't seem as though they're making any changes to the physical or electrical design of LGA775 for Penryn, it should then be down to motherboard manufacturers updating BIOSes with the appropriate microcode updates and VRM programming, as and where necessary.
Even if the manufacturers don't support it directly, if it can be done, you can guarantee that some of the enthusiasts will find out the way.

it will be interesting what performance jump this will bring and if it allows any increase in clock speed etc (not always guarenteed - look at amd's 65nm part)

From what I've seen 3.46-3.73GHz and a reduced TDP were the target.
AMD told us from the off that there would be no performance gain, it was purely to lower power consumption and die size. they will be using it to prepare themselves for Barcelona while still being able to produce processors right now.
Intel on the other hand are suggesting tasty improvements. i MAY HAVE to jump on this bandwagon... the current Core2 is good enough but cooler and faster (and potentially cheaper) is going to be hard to resist
