You have to stay until your contract finishes. If you upgraded then you have to wait until the contract that comes with the upgrade finishes.

Or you can pay your remaining rental and leave immediately

Yep, when you upgraded and went into that 18month contract, you did just that - entered an 18 contract with stay with o2.

The only way to get out now is to pay your way out.

or if you go for around a year then you could goto phones4u and get them to buy the rest of your contract. they did that for my t-mobile contract. quite alright

Another thing to do if u really do want to be with them... you can lower your tariff whenever it is allowed and ask to pay up front for the remaining of the contract...

Also depending on your phone insurance, you can cancel your contract after 9 months I think. I know Carphones LifeLine Complete does this.

    8. Protecting your airtime contract
    a. If you tell us that you want to end your airtime contract, we may end your liability to the airtime provider as follows.
    • For a 12-month airtime contract, we will cover you for 9 monthly line-rental payments if you decide to cancel it after the
    first 3 calendar months.
    • For an 18-month airtime contract, we will cover you for 12 monthly line-rental payments if you decide to cancel it after
    the first 6 calendar months.
    • For a 24-month airtime contract, we will cover you for 15 monthly line-rental payments if you decide to cancel it after the
    first 9 calendar months.
    • If you upgrade your phone, you are taking out a new airtime contract. If you transfer this policy to insure your new phone
and you then need to cancel your airtime contract, we will cover you in the same way as shown in the points above. The
start date of the new airtime contract will be the date of the upgrade.
    b. You must have bought your airtime contract from The Carphone Warehouse at the same time as this policy. If you
make a claim under 8a, you will not be able to keep your mobile-phone number.

Incidentally, They might offer you a cracking upgrade offer. I got offered N95, 800mins and 500 texts for £40 a month, plus £60 one off for the phone a few months ago.
