WARNING: O2 and overcharging for Nokia MAP's on N95 - complete joke

I have to get this off my chest, i am really mad about this and would also like to warn other people who might end up in the same situation.

Last month after getting my N95 i thought i would test out the Nokia Map app on my N95. To get turn by turn navigation, you have to pay extra. The option for payment via the phone are by card or the software will send so premium rate SMS to pay for it via you bill, so i went for the SMS option.

The application then started sending some SMS's. However, after a minute or so it came back with the message "message sending failed", and thus the navigation option was not activated. I then gave up on it.

Then this month comes my phone bill and you will never guess what , there is about £10 worth of £1.50 text messages.

So i called O2. After about 40 minutes on their 0870 number i have been though 4 different departments, none of which could help or even really knew what i was talking about. Eventually i was told, "this is a third-party company that do this, you need to phone a company called Net Size UK Ltd, there is absolutely nothing we can do to help you".

Ok, so i call Net Size UK ltd (another 0870 number). After speaking to a couple of their departments (with people who take the 'i can't be arsed attitude' to a whole new level), they tell me that they deal with billing only, i need to talk a another company called Openbit. However, they only have a number in Finland.

I then found the Openbit site, click on support to find a lame FAQ which helpfully tells me, "If you have not been charged correctly in your phone bill, please contact your network operator.".

    F......F......S.....!!!!!!!!!!

All i can say is that if anyone has this problem, forget ever getting a refund. It will probably cost you about the same amount in 0870 calls anyway.

Oh, and i have since used Nokia MAP's navigation and it's absolutely terrible so don't bother full stop.

When do you suppose they will be releasing a new version of that then?

Ive been tempted to buy the current version with the bluetooth gps unit.

Yeah, but that does not really help get my money back.

I am running TomTom on my N95 now with a bluetooth unit.

Unfortunately, there are rumours that TomTom might not be supporting the N95 at all (despite people all over the net saying "they are working on it, coz i know this bloke see...") due to TomTom not thinking the N95's GPS is up to scratch.

Hopefully that's just nonsense and they are, but it surprises me that they have not got it out already if they are indeed planning on it. They must be losing out a lot to Copilot who have had a N95 version out for a couple of weeks. In most respects, there is little between Copilot and TomTom now. In fact some aspects of Copilot are better. It's only £69.99 too.

The other rumour is that TomTom are working on a whole new version (maybe 7?). It's no secret that tomtom is freely available all over the net. Maybe they want a more secure version, rather than just patch it, have it cracked in about an hour, then have the free for all that would ensue.

I think you should take the line that O2 charged you on your bill due to some problem with their network and text sending.

Must be breach of contract to overcharge you - you might then even have the option of cancelling the contract and keeping the phone.

Strange, I have never had a problem with the N95 maps, it uses my GPRS connection to download the relevant maps. Not that I use it a whole deal, if I go anywhere I usually take TomTom.

    Unhappy O2 not good news

Interesting, I see tha AutoPilot has had trouble with billing and so have a good many others. I actually work on the O2 account and have done for many years. The billing system isn't infallable and has problems from time to time - particularly when the infrastructure connecting the many billing servers have data network connectivity problems. You might have been spuriously billed while data was being collected or restored from backups as the system has been know to be quite flaky at times. Whether or not you have a case to argue against cancelling the contract for incorrect billing is another matter, as the contract you all sign covers O2 for any mistakes they make unless they are proven to be the fault of the company. try proving it - you might find that difficult as I did with my contract phone! And I work for the company!

Anyway, it will get more interesting now that the billing is going off-shore to India, this is bad news as we were all told that O2 wouldn't be doing this. Big about turn I'm afraid. So if you think it's bad now, wait until December when it goes! Good luck to you all as I am jumping ship like all my colleagues before I'm training the Indians to do my job.....

Hell-fire, that's bad news indeed. After my experience with BT's Indian call centres, which simply beggars belief, i will have another reason to leave O2 for good.

    thanks for the heads up.

I think its porbably fair to say that it isnt a o2 problem. You used a premium rate text service, which buggered up, however, that was likely down to the originator rather than o2. Without being condescending, wait till you see what they'd have tried to charge you for downloading the maps on the fly (terrible idea imo, 256mb of flash cant cost more than about 2 quid)

Where did you hear this? Is this the billing back office or a movement of a call centre?

No, it is O2's responsibility. Partly anyway, which is part of the problem. Firstly, they billed me for it, they must take some responsibility in much the same way as BT got hammered by OFCOM for not taking any responsibility for charges from unscrupulous premium rate operators. O2 have an agreement with the premium rate text provider, they told me that much, so they can't have their cake and eat it. Secondly, O2 sold me the phone with this feature on and they even advertised the feature in aid to shift more handsets, so again they must take some responsibility. So should Nokia, but they wont either. No one will.

They have, it's was in the region of £20 for a single days usage. After that i found Nokia's Map Loader, which allows you to do it free via your PC. O2 hardly advertise that now do they, i wonder why. I went mad and said i would cancel my contract as i was still in my cooling off period. Shock horror, they did refund that. Funny how they can suddenly do these things when its in there financial interest. If i was 2 months into my contract, i would bet my life savings the response would be more like "Sorry, it's impossible for me to do this. You will have to write a letter". But i was very lucky, the girl told me what i was being charged when i phoned up about the txt's, most people dont find out until they get their first bill and its too late.

I have a enough of O2. I had enough a couple of years ago, but foolishly went back as the signal is so good at my house. IMO, T-Mobile are the only network that offer actual real value for money.

I arent saying someone shouldnt foot the bill, just it doesnt neccesarilly lie entirely @ o2s door. I'm with tmobile now, and i have to say, wnw is the dogs. I have tomtom, but theres nothing like being able to follow yourself round town on a sattelite image downloaded from google maps.

It's the billing back office - O2 has various advance billing servers and multiple billing servers that mediate across to the main billing server, these will be staying put. Don't quite know if the call centres are following suit, but the billing services are going to India without a shadow of a doubt. Like I said, I am looking for another job like the rest of us, we will get no recompense as we are only likely to be told a few days before the contract would be renewed. Something to do with keeping everyone there and keeping us in the dark so we don't leave!! Not a chance!
