When my 6230i screen got damaged, it cost me £50 at my local hpone shop to replace. However, the external casing was still fine, so it didnt need replacing as it was compression damage to the screen.

As yours is the d900, I am guessing it would be slightly more (about £65?), and if the casing is also damaged it would be able £15 more...

Depends. If just the external plastic is shattered, but the image on the screen underneath seems fine, then you just need the lens. If the picture on the LCD seems distorted, bits are missing, or you see a blackish blob obscuring images, then you need a new LCD.

I would recommend getting a whole new front fascia if you want just the lens replaced, as the glue that often comes attached to the lenses from auction sites is crap, and you end up with dust creeping in from the corners. Replacing the LCD by yourself isn't so bad I think, but it's been quite a while since I've even seen one. Definitely easier than a D500/600 anyway.
