I have a w850i on 3. I've been reading abut debranding it but I can't see any advantage to it. Can somebody enlighten me?

Is that just it? They do look pretty cool but I'm pretty happy with the 3 menus. I thought it might open up a bunch of new options to play around with.

I heard if you debrand the phone you invalidate the warranty, is this true?

I'm not 100% sure, but if its an unofficial firmware then its going to void your warrenty.

However, any loss of data incurred through updating the firmware with official firmware still won't make sony or whoever liable.

But I think it depends on the company, with Nokia, your warrenty isn't void if you update to an official firmware, however if you fail to back ur phone up, then any loss of data is your own fault, which is quite fair.

i'm sure three will not touch your phone ever again if you debrand it but i am not sure about sony ericsson afterall the firmware i am using now is the original firmware from SE before the networks change it into something simple.

Also just a not there are two or three versions, mine is 49 which is relatively easy to debrand but i cant vouch for 51. if you are happy then i would avoid it as i am getting bored of it already hehehe http://forums.hexus.net/images/smilies/juggle.gif

    1. The networks have their own modified firmware versions. They often contain bugs and run slowly (sluggish menus etc). Flashing to a generic FW can make the phone run much better, partly because it's usually the generic versions that get updated quickest and contain less bloat.

    2. Some networks also disable certain features, like VOIP on the N95 being removed by Orange and Vodafone. Another example would be all the people upgrading the N73 to the 'Music' version for better MP3 capabilities. They also add some crap ones you will never use.

    3. It gives the phone a much greater resale value on eBay when you upgrade next year.

    4. Some people are extremely vein when it comes to mobiles. Or just bored.

But if it's not broke, and you are happy, why fix it.

Cheers for your help. I'm pretty happy with it as it is at the moment so I think I'll leave it.
