Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
The HTC Kaiser is finally here - HTC TyTN II laucnhes in Europe!
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 - The day has finally arrives, ladies and gents! The long-awaited 3.5G uber-smartphone from HTC has finally launched in Europe - the HTC TyTN II. We’ve been squirming in our seats for this Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional-powered monster of a smartphone to launch, and now that it has, it’s a bit surreal.

I'm heading to Inkino on Tottenham Court Road tomorrow to play with their demo model - this may well be my new phone, especially as some places say they'll be shipping in as little as 9 days! :) :)

Seem a bit pricey! :(
Depends what you want, the FlexT 20 with W\'n\'W is good if you do more surfing than talking.

Voda is 125Mb cap IIRC, and 3 have poor voice coverage in most areas I have friends in (London for example! :()
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Got a Kaiser and it's really nice :D.
It looks nice and is a big step up from my TyTN but I am not using it as my main phone yet (the TyTN is a phone I have come to depend on for everything, calls, web and push-mail). The case seems to show every damm finger print mind you ;).
Build quality is very decent (better then the TyTN and that was already leagues ahead of the older Wizard etc.). The today screens plugins taken from the Touch work well and seem much less of a memory hog then the ones on the Touch. Mine does not have TouchFlow on it but it is a pre-release ROM, not upgraded it to the final ROM yet so can't say much more on the software.
For the other people in the thread who asked about the Vox, it's a cracking little smart phone :D, if you can live without the touchscreen (I can't) it's really nice and does have the keyboard making it very good for direct push. It's also very well priced as far as I can see. Mine is proving a hit with the girlfriend.
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Is the Kaiser also known as the TyTN II?

Yep, Kaiser was the HTC platform code name (just like the TyTN was/is a device based on the HTC Hermes platform).
HTC seem to sometimes keep the platform code names for release products (i.e. the Vox) and sometimes rename them just before launch. It largely depends if HTC are going to sell phone with there own HTC branding I think. Phone carriers call the phone whatever they want anyway.
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Cool. I get confused with the HTC name schemes :)
I'm starting to warm to this phone a lot. If the TouchFlow software can be added to it (officially or otherwise) and works well, then i think i'll be sold on it.

I'm sure it's already added...?

I think a version of it is in the final HTC ROM (it is not in my near-final ROM). That said I would not be surprised if operator versions of the device did not have it (i.e. Vodafone V1615 etc.).
Time will tell, if it is not in an operator rom it should be easy to hack back in.
It's nice but its not that special and the target market for this device is business, Vodafone are really pushing it on the corporates for example, and I am not sure TouchFlow is so important there. For the record I turned TouchFlow off on my Touch as it bogged down the device to much in my view.
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Well by the time i come to upgrade or move network (December) we should know what it comes with and how it performs :)
I guessed it wouldn't come with TouchFlow because of it being aimed at corporates. But that's just am assumption really.
Depending on what the operators do to the firmware i'd be tempted to get a SIM free verison or just flash it with a version from XDA Developers.
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Will you be able to flash over an operators firmware with another version?
I'm trying to cost up getting one, and what the best contract etc. solution is. T-Mobile have a £5 off pcm offer this month - which isn't brilliant - over 18 months that's £90. The sim free version is just so expensive though!

Officially speaking, flashing another non-operator ROM will void the guarantee and licence. By default the Kaiser has it's ROM locked to the operator or OEM (just like all HTC devices).
Once these are out in the open I think it will be a matter of weeks until the ROM locks are broken (check XDA devs for that sort of info), then its just a case of flashing what you want, risks accepted of course. Just remember to flash it back to the operator ROM if it needs repair work ;).
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Do you think the kaiser will be out on orange within the next 3 months ?
Re: When's the HTC Kaiser in the UK on contract?
Spoke to the t-mobile man today, he said he expected it to be free on contracts of £35+.
Considering that;
18 month contract £35 (£180 credit) + £7.50 web'n'walk - £5.00 september discount
= £675 over 18 months, which is the equivilent to the phone + £10 pcm. But depends how far that £180 cred goes.

There's no long contracts or tie-ins, this is a completely network-free phone, so you can put your SIM card in or get a Pay As You Go one and get started straight away. Heck, it'll even configure the network settings for you.

Thought I would let you guys know, should any of you be interested in getting it on PAYG.
