We've had 3G for over 4 years in this country and other countries have had it for longer. 3G is appearing in all but the cheapest phones now and the more expensive ones feature HSDPA.
Battery life must be a concern, but what's the point of putting Safari/YouTube/Google Maps onto a phone if you're only going to give it a slow GPRS/EDGE connection? It would be like putting a Ford Fiesta engine in a Ferrari. Yes, the fuel consumption will be better but it defeats the whole point of having a Ferrari in the first place. Unless you're a total poser.
