    basic new phone

we've tried two Treo 680s unsuccessfully - but the battery life - even with software patches was excellent. (the previous 600 and 650 were excellent).

I think we will give up and return to a palm + a phone.

so any suggestions please either for
a basic (no camera / internet / contract) phone with a good battery life and straightforward interface (= Nokia?)
    or
is it worth waiting for one of the new intel smartphones - as a combined device?

How long does the battery need to last? With moderate use of internet my vario 2 lasts about 2 days, although if used heavily it needs charging everynight

6230i is the best most basic phone i have ever used. another one that i really like is the w880i because of how thin it is and very nice user interface. if you want a cheaper version then the w800i or w810i is a good alternative. all 4 phones suggested here have great battery life.

i'm using a htc artemis aka xda orbit which is a pretty decent phone. recently i even flashed it to the htc touch interface which makes it look so much better and the GPS is a plus. if i use the GPS a lot then of course it needs a lot of charging otherwise i can use it for 2 stretch it to 3 days sometimes on moderate use.

i've never liked the palm based phones simply cuz they have more restrictions and very bulky i find.

let me know if you need more advice cuz i have played with quite a lot of phone over the past 3 years alone (nearly 200 now)

Is the new firmware online somewhere? And can you go back? I'd quite like to try it out, but im not sure if i'd get on with it.

    Re: basic new phone

We used to both carry a Nokia(6330 or 6130) + a Visor Edge (slim metal cased Palm PDA).

My Treo650 gives 7 Days + moderate calls / PDA usage or 3 days + heavy music playing / PDA usage. Carrying one device (650) is slimmer than carrying both phone & PDA. Clearly not as neat as a modern phone alone.

The 680 is neater as a package, but getting 24hrs on standby would have been good!
In reality I'd like to be able to have 3 days standby + 1 hour talk + 1 hour diary / address book.

The Windows devices are not viable, so I think we will revert to seperate phone & PDA.

The Nokia 6330i - just worked (without any problem + got all the basics right) - would love to know where to buy that or similar new and cheap!

Best one that fits your description at the min is the Nokia 6300.

Quite a large screen, 2 Meg camera and MP3 player with option to add memory card later. Other than that it is the basic Nokia that is going at the minute.

All the networks have this phone available on contract or payt. Going for about £100 on payt and available free on the cheapest contracts.

    Re: basic new phone

    I've gone from a P800 to a z310i

I've found this is easier to carry than the previous model which was modelled on a housebrick and all I use it for is calling/texting so I don't need anything too fancy.

The interface is quite good, I like the little animated icons and the colours not too bad on it.
