    Smartphone recommendation please

My Palm PDA has currently broken (dead battery) and I would very much like to replace both my Palm and current Nokia mobile with a new Smartphone. I know nothing about mobiles and would appreciate your advice.

I currently am with Orange on PAYG and pay approx £50/year in credit. I use the phone every day but mainly to receive calls. My Palm is an old Palm V and sychronizes Outlook 2003 data (except emails).

The features of a phone that I would like include:
    • Must be able to store contacts from all 476 people in my Outlook Contacts. Each contact has a name, phone, address and typed info in the Notes section in certain cases (40%)
    • Would like it to store Calender information from Outlook
    • Would like to to store Tasks from Outlook
    • Not fussed about emails but it would be nice to sycnronise Outlook emails if possible. Don't want to pick up emails from the phone.
    • A basic camera would be nice but not fussed.
    • Cost is not a big issue but I don't want an account based deal (no monthly contract).

sounds like any of the Windows Mobile phones would do what you are after. They sync with Outlook very well... unsurprisingly

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/ has loads of stuff about the current cream of the crop.

Mt t-mobile Vario is fine battery wise. Only have to charge it every 4-5 days. Same for my wife's vario 2. So they are fine for battery life!

    Re: Smartphone recommendation please

Where I seem to be struggling is finding a Windows Mobile based phone that isn't tied to a monthly contract. I want to stick with Orange PAYG. Any ideas?

Probably cheaper to get a contract, especially if you want to use data.

Palm are releasing the 500v shortly. Just had a conference call with them while I was at work and it sounds really good.

    Re: Smartphone recommendation please

    Get a palm treo 750v.

Awesome phone with now a wm6 update available.....this as gotta be the most stable windows mobile out there IMO.

or the 500v mentioned above even though that's smartphone platform rather than the 750v's full WM6 PRO PPC Operating system.

    Re: Smartphone recommendation please

    Hi

I've been through a number of windows mobile devices
My latest is a HTC Touch - While is not the most powerfull device out there (my previous was a XDA Exec) it probably got the best form factor of any phone I've had
    http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch.htm

There is a new HTC Touch out which adds a slide out keyboard and more power under the hood but apparently at the expense of battery life
    http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch_dual.htm

    All the best

I really had my hopes up for the Touch 2; its the reason I didn't get a Touch 1, but HTC have done a very odd and possibly daft thing, in leaving Wifi out of a £350+ phone. After reading various sites I think it has baffled a lot of people. They are probably trying to push other technologies but they could have included it, particularly considering the price of the device as I have already pointed out.

    Yep

The lack of wifi is just plain daft

When the Touch 2 was leaked with a proposed spec which had all you could ask for including 3.5G and a built in GPS, I was green with envy

But now I find that it does not have a built in GPS or even Wifi - I'm more than happy to stay with the plain old touch (saying that I'm still really happy with it)
