    Sony Ericsson P990i or P1i?

    Hi All!

I've got a dilemma, I need a new SIM free phone, handsets packed in but I'm looking at the above phones. I've never looked into Smartphones as their described but the P990i does have alot of nice features without becoming overly big and expensive. I'm not really interested in a PDA phone unless of course you can change my mind with the pros and cons over a smartphone!

I do like the look of the P1i over the P990i but as I say it does have more features, I also have the TomTom 6 Navigator lying around from a phone bundle I brought more than a year ago, I think. I've been told I could use it on the P990i, although I do tend to use the TomTom One v2 but it's there if the TomTom's not with me.

Cost wise, I don't want to spend over 250 quid, if anybody knows where I can get the above handsets cheap, I'd appreciate links/directions.

So any of you folks got any comments/advice for me, I'd appreciate all input, thanks.

Re: Sony Ericsson P990i or P1i?

P990i had so many problem with shutting down, disconnection , low battery life etc...I was going to buy one and decided against after reading the problems, new firmware might sort these problems out by now.

It seems like the P1i is out to satisfy all the P series lovers who were a bit miffed, it looks a decent bit of kit, TomTom works on both.

One other phone to look at maybe?
    HTC S710

In short, P990i I would say no, P1i seems to be ok.

    Hope that helps

Re: Sony Ericsson P990i or P1i?

As mentioned above, I wouldn't really recommend the P990i for mostly reasons stated.
A good range to look at is the HTC handsets! They have some cracking phones out at the moment and are the main manufacturer of smart phones on the market.

As mentioned the S710 is a great little handset, but depending on your usage the battery life isn't amazing, but then again not many smartphones put under heavy use daily will last longer than a few days.

For your requirements will you need a full QWERTY keyboard or touch screen? Or would you ideally like both? Also is GPS a requirement or do you have a GPS dongle currently?

    Recommended:
    - S710 ~ It's a great phone with full qwerty keyboard but doesn't have a touch screen. Has a 2MP camera, runs on Windows Mobile 6, has a clear display and doesn't run too slowly.
    - TOUCH ~ Great new device, very nice piece of kit. No keyboard on this one though, touch screen only, but their new 'touch-flo' technology is rather impressive. I was dubious at first but using your fingers to navigate is just as easy as using a stylus.
    - TOUCH Dual ~ Same specification pretty much as the touch BUT comes with a slide mechanism to reveal a keyboard.. not sure on price of this handset though.
    - TyTn 2 ~ Also worth a look at, great specification and one of their latest models to hit the market. 3MP camera built in, Windows Mobile 6 etc..

All of the above are manufactured by HTC and full specs can be had here. Out of the above phones I'd probably go for the S710 due to its size, functionality and price!
Haven't really had much experience with the P1i so couldn't really comment on that one.
    Hope this helps.

Re: Sony Ericsson P990i or P1i?

I have a P990. I quite like it as a phone, but the software is rubbish. I would put money on the P1i being much better.

As Tomahawk said though, look at some of the HTC phones instead. I'm planning on a TyTn 2 in a couple of months as a replacement.

Prefer the touch screen, don't really want a QWERTY keyboard and with regards to the GPS, if it's there its an added bonus.

    Definitely, thanks.

Cut down the chase to the P1i and the HTC S710, for me the P1i looks better but I need to match the specs and features of both before I decide anything definite.

What's the cheapest anybody's come across on these phones, SIM FREE?

    Everyone, thanks for your help.

P1i from random company I haven't heard of, (add postage): £274

P1i from Play, with free delivery: £289

S710 sim free, free postage, £220.89

There might be places cheaper then this, I havent come across them, so just to be safe take a look yourself

I'd definitely take the P1i over the P990i.

It benefits from over a year of software polishing, it's features are better and it's smaller!

Played with the P990i briefly but not enough to make a comparison unfortunately.

Re: Sony Ericsson P990i or P1i?

DO NOT GET THE P990i If you must get one of the two definitely get the P1i. BUT I would go with Tomahawk suggestions and particularly pay close attention to the HTC TyTN II/Kaiser/ T-Mobile Vario III. This phone has a built in GPS which will come in very handy if you use TomTom a fair bit. Everything else about the phone is excellent. I promise you once you start using a PocketPC Phone you will wonder how you ever managed with a 'normal' phone.

Edit: Just seen you went with the P1i. Nevermind, it's still a very good phone and the form factor is probably more to your taste.

P1i definatly should be the choice, it has more RAM 128megs of it. So it hangs less
