    Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

I really, really need a new phone to replace my HTC Magician.

Must be a Windows Mobile smartphone and I'd like 3G/HSDPA, and built-in GPS. The TYTN II ticks all the boxes however I'm not sure how robust the slidey mechanism is and I'm not convinced the keyboard is particularly useful anyhow. I know it's a good phone but it's a little bulky cos of the slidey, and I'd prefer the HTC Trinity - however I must be on T-Mobile and they don't offer the Trinity.

So, is there is anything else to consider? (HTC Touch, LG Viewty I'm assuming aren't 'proper' PDA phones and no GPS so have ruled these out.)

The touch is wm6, so will at least pack everything your magician does. a tytn when upgraded to wm6 (the work of about 10 mins) ticks all the boxes bar hsdpa.

Hows about the artemis (compact III) same form factor as your magician, but with wm6, hsdpa&gps

Re: Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

It's a problem; really you want the HTC Touch Cruise, but there's no sign of that on T yet - so far as I'm aware, O2 are nabbing that first (and rebranding it the Orbit 2). The HTC Touch IS certainly a proper PDA phone, and the MDA Touch 256 runs WM6. That said, although it has GPS software, so far as I'm aware, it doesn't have a built-in GPS receiver.
The TyTN II is reasonably robust, but it's a bit of a brick - I've got one in service w/ a director at work, and it's well-built.

I've just bought myself a glofiish X800 after been really impressed by the screen on this thing, for its size its stonking.

I should have it by sat, so can post an honest opion on it. I was going to wait for the Touch Cruise, but then i saw her screen.... Now i'm a beliver.

Re: Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

Artemis is not HSDPA I think, and the Touch Cruise looks to be a similar form factor to it (which I don't like that much, I don't understand the wheel/ball mullarkey). It is a bit more svelte than the TYTN II and even the Trinity, but I still prefer the Trinity (I've had a go on one brought in from overseas). I think Orange badge the Trinity as an M700.

The Glofiish is NICE! Looks like just what I'm after, I'll have to look at pricing it up vs getting a TYTN II on contract (but I think the TYTN II will come out ahead by at least £100 even after allowing for a cheaper SIM only contract - in which case I think I may as well get the TYTN II ) .

Ah well, picked up a Vario III (HTC TYTN II / Kaiser) in the end. Just charging it now

It does take SDHC cards (eg 4Gb), doesn't it? Need to order one but want to check it will work

Re: Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

I picked up a 8GB microSD from Moby Memory

Sandisk 8GB Micro SD (SDHC) memory card with Sandisk USB reader : SanDisk 8GB micro SD

That card reader is fantastic too, it's tiny! Smallest 8GB pen drive i've ever seen if you want to use it like that.

SanDisk are releasing 12GB cards soon.

Re: Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

I had a HTC P4350 which had a similar slidey keyboard to the TYTN II, it was rock solid - if that was your main worry with the TYTN II, I would go for it.

Re: Alternative to HTC TYTN II?

Yep cheers all, I've ordered an 8Gb card now and then I'll be able to install some programmes and play with my new phone in earnest. So far, I've mainly been wandering round following myself on Google Earth - blip...blip....blip.....

The slidey does annoy me just a little when I'm gripping the phone in my fist or using the stylus with the screen closed as there is just a little bit of movement there. However I'm finding the keyboard incredibly useful (surprising after using my Magician for so long, and PDAs before that) and well worth having after all

I've discovered the MSN live application. It's fantastic.

T-mobile have removed it on their standrad firmware, but it's included in the Dutty ROMs if you fancy giving them a go

I'm sure you can fine a .cab for it on the XDA-Devs forum.

The X800 is about 40% of the size of the TYTN, which i think counts for a lot, but you loose the keyboard.

Unlike the touch cruise, its windows mobile professional.

The screen is simply amazing, on something like local.live maps, or google maps, the satalite lock happens in less than 30 seconds, its accuracy is slightly better than the TYTN i'd say, and miles ahead of the n95 obviously. The wifi speed is good, and the 3.5G data speed is fantastic.

In all i'm very happy with my x800 vrs the TYTN II, the touch cruise, i don't know, i didn't spend that long with one to make a properly informed choice.

Err, the touch cruise is Windows Mobile Professional. Take a look at the HTC site! It wouldn't really be a touch without touchscreen, and touchscreen = Professional.
