My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

    Hey guys,

My good old Sony Ericson k800i fell of the top of my computer last night straight bang into my pint of milk. Soneedless to say its not working anymore. Now im on a contract with Vodafone. What do i do now? Just buy a new phone and hope the sim card still works? What if it doesnt ?

I realised that the chances of this happening the way it did were fairly remote. So i think someone up above doesn't like me the best

Re: My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

ahh damn, somethign like this happened recently with my brother, he was on the phone while drinking a glass of juice, and it plonked right in. he binned the hone, but i took it out, it still worked, so i left it to dry. n then opened it n cleaned the juice out with isopropyl spray. but the screen has a blotchy effect, need a new one.

Re: My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

the isopropyl spray probably disolved the very top coating of the screen. Powerful stuff that, same goes for acetone.

Electronic contact cleaner is probably a safer bet.

Try taking it to bits, drying it on the radiator for a day or so. Get rid of milky smells.

Then, if it still doesn't work, phone vodaphone support and say your phone has stopped working .

Re: My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

If you have insurance on your account then you can claim on that and the phone will be replaced in the store there and then. With the insurance there is a £25 excess that will just go onto your next bill. No insurance and you will have to buy yourself a new phone.

With regards to the sim and memory card, if the mem card is done for you will have to replace it out of your own pocket. Sim on the other hand just ask for a replacement from one of the stores and they will do it there and then for you free.

Re: My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

Memory cards are difficult to kill.

I went to Corfu on holiday, picked up my belongings one morning, we were going to a lovely little cove until the afternoon.

About half an hour after I'd been floundering about in this bay, I realised I had put my (1 month old) phone into my swimming shorts pocket. Crap.
I reach for it. Nothing there. Double Crap.

I eventually found it about 4 meters down on the edge of a patch of sea-grass. The phone was KIA (if you're going to drop your phone into anything... Don't let it be the sea). All its contacts were salt-damaged.

The memory stick was absolutely fine.

Will it be easy to get rid of the milky smell? Everytime you bring the phone close to your face to talk, you'd go, OOOoooh ...or maybe use a handsfree?

    Hi,

Sorry to hear that - working for Vodafone UK myself (and as suggested above) if you've got Vodafone's Cover Me Insurance on your contract then this would cover against accidental water damage.

In situations like this we would recommend taking the handset to a local Vodafone store and they can sort out a repair for you.

If Vodafone provide you with a replacement handset (i.e. the phone is beyond repair) then there shouldn't be any problems placing your old SIM card in the phone (if the SIM is damaged we can even give you a new SIM and reconnect your old number to it). I'm not sure how far you are into your contract but if you're 60 days from the end of your commitment then you could take out an Upgrade, there is now an upgrade online tool on our main homepage at the bottom left.

    All the best

nope, the screen was blotchy before the spray, from the juice (must of penetrated). as far as i know isopropyl is bad for screens with anti glare coatings.

but the isopropyl did disolve and break down the rubber/soft seals in the case and arround the screen. meh.

Hi Ferral, Hopefullyuseful doesn't work in a store. He's a member of the Vodafone Forum Team as am I. We're an internet-based Customer Service team looking to help any customers with their online queries, as not all forums are as lucky as this one to have staff posting in their own time like you do!
You'll see posts from Hopefullyuseful, edwardpeter, Techgirl, Gembo2609 and MinervaUK on here; we're all genuine Vodafone employees just in case anyone ever wonders.

    Thanks,

Re: My phone fell into a pint of milk :(

Thats pretty cool, got quite a few Vodafone bases covered then! Me for store side support whenever I can and you guys from the customer services side of things. Doesn't get much better than that!

I've plenty time at the min due to being off on the sick at present due to a severe back injury, doing my nut not being able to get about and sitting at home is getting on my nerves something rotten. Just wish there was something I could be doing from home instead of just sitting here

Can't wait to get back instore and get going again. Thankfully my Phisio starts on 25 March so should be pretty soon I hope.
