HP IPAQ 614c business navigator - an alternative to HTC..

I've just gone for this device as I reckon it's ticked the main boxes for my next phone: GPS, touch screen, thumbpad, 3G and wifi.

    Headline stuff:

3G HSDPA at up to 3.6/7.2 Mbps speeds
    Assisted GPS satellite location
    Dual standard Wi-Fi Wireless 802.11b/g
Large 2.8” 240x320 pixel transflective TFT colour display
    Ultra-fast 520Mhz Marvell PXA270 processor
Touchwheel, Touch screen and 12key numeric keypad
Quality built 60x117x17.5mm candy bar design case, 145g
    Quadband EDGE/GPRS Worldwide support
Easy Thumbwheel or Pad one-handed usage

Was going for a touch dual but this seems somewhat more capable.. Hope it's not crap but at least HP are doing 50 quid cashback this month!

Buy the HP iPaq 614c Pocket PC/PDA Official UK Stock

Now i've just got to trawl though all those WM5/6 threads - after being on WM2003 there's so much new software to try!

Looks awesome, wish my new contract mobile htc kaiser 2 had the cpu you've got. The ever so slight slowdown it features when a lot is going on is a bit annoying! I think i'd miss my querty slideout keyboard though! Now I guess you have to find a good contract with data plan to take advantage of the HDSPA!

I almost signed on the dotted line for a HTC TYTN II today, but got an 8600 Luna instead.

The HP does look rather good, and all their PDAs I've used seemed sturdily built, and at that price, good value too

Well - in a moment of madness - I bought one.

    Bloody hell it's great

Haven't had too much time to play around but tomtom went on just fine and it's a heck of an upgrade over my old phone. You're right digit - i need me a data plan now - any suggestions? I'm not a heavy phone user really but I would like to use t'internet on the move on it ATM it's connecting via wifi (cool).

Two problems - first I need a case (ordered) and second.. the missus now wants one. Doh!

There's 50 quid cashback on HP stuff till the end of the month so i'll save 100quid on the two handsets.

The new families of iPAQ's really are a huge improvement over the last lot. Excellent products and the build quality is much better than the HTC stuff I've touched.

I work for HP and aim to get hold of one by the end of the month

Stop making me want to spend money! I'm finally starting to want to move on from my aged p910i and this is looking tempting. If you find a decent data plan please post it up (might have to check at Expansys) as I'm in a similar boat (not really a big phone user - probably spend £20 a month tops, but would love something with a reasonable data package so I can grab emails on the road and stuff.

How does the £50 cashback work? Is this direct with HP or a third party?

Re: HP IPAQ 614c business navigator - an alternative to HTC..

direct with HP - there's a claim form link on expansys - fill in form, send with the invoice etc.

I'm going to have a chat with T-Mobile over the next few days as they've got decent plans and they're linking their 3G network with three by the years end so they should have good coverage too.

Tried the GPS last night (got a lift so I could play) and it works perfectly with tomtom Googlemaps is pre-installed too but I need that dataplan for that!

Only problem so far is buggy WM5 software not working properly on WM6..

Re: HP IPAQ 614c business navigator - an alternative to HTC..

Me considering the phone as well... its £288 @it247 which is a steal.. plus you get £50 claim back till end of march, total of £238 (inc VAT)which aint bad. regarding data plans, there is always a clause, no one is decent enuf to provide a good plan. Right now trying out O2s free web bolt on (free unlimited data on your phone, no connecting to laptap ...), its free for anyplan above £35 (on contract) or £25 on their sim only plans, otherwise £7.50. They also have free unlimited wifi (cloud network) for £7.50 a month. Agrred not blazing speed, but cause I am on a 1 month contract I can bug out if I feel i am being ripped off. Spoke to Customer care, and they said they dont have a fair usage policy anymore, but have a policy which does not restrict usage as long as others are not affected or you dont use VoIp (I guess thats a fancy name for a fair usage policy)... complete review is currently available only at Tracy and Matts blog.

    Cheers

I've just ordered a second one - for the missus. I've pretty happy with it aside from the case not being available yet (argh).

    So far i've installed:

    pBar (free task manager)
spb menu (not free but it's very good)
    Opera Mobile
    Tomtom 6
    Memmaid (great little app)
Sprite Backup (think Acronis for mobile)
Sprite Terminator (in case someone steals it so I can hunt them down)
Pocket Mechanic (collection of very useful utils inc. the ability to move apps to the sd card)

I went with a sandisk 2gb microsd premier card as it's much faster than the more capacious cards.

I saw this phone on Expansys today and it's got me thinking that I should get one. Can connect it up to my work's Exchange server too for calendar/ email....which'd be useful :-)
