    N95 tools and applications

Seeing as there is a few of us here with the cracking phone, why not share the best applications you've found so we can all use the phone to the maximum.

First of all I'll add the things I've added and use a lot

Fring - fring – Make free mobile calls, IM with Skype, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk™, SIP & Twitter, AIM® & Yahoo!™ ; multiple IM client, supports AIM, MSN and all the other usual suspects, works well with Wi-fi and is very easy to use and configure.

Garmin Mobile XT - cracking Sat-Nav using the internal GPS system which also highlights pubs and places which for me is a bonus

    So... what you using?

    Re: N95 tools and applications

Best Profiles so that my phone goes into general mode when I plug in the charger, then goes back to silent when I unplug it. I hate my phone going off in lectures/exams/funerals etc .

Best Taskman to kill all those applications I keep accidentally leaving open by pressing the red button instead of going through the many levels of "Back up" before you get to "exit".

Is Garmin Mobile XT better than the built in one btw? How much is it?

    Re: N95 tools and applications

The garmin XT software can be had from various places and the price is around 70 quid from Here Carphonewarehouse are reportly selling it as well so you can pop and order it from them.

I've found it runs quicker than the nokia one and even responds better than the dedicated Sat Nav that my mate uses.

Cheers. Am I reading that right, it comes on microSD card? The 8GB doesn't have a slot.

That said, I can probably live without turn by turn directions for now.

You might know this already but make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest one to get demand paging. It will make you enjoy the n95 even more

    Re: N95 tools and applications

Most Satnav progs can be downloaded for mobile then put onto the phone via the data cable. Then just install it like you would anything else.

The Nokia 6110 Navigator uses Route 66 software, used it a few times and its pretty accurate I must admit. This software is also available as a download for the N95.

Nokia Maps that is supplied on the N95 isn't to bad but I have found it to be a bit slow at times and the interface is quite clunky with having to put your start postcode in and then the destination. With the 6110 Navi you just put your destination in and when it logs onto the satellites takes where you are as the starting point.

    Re: N95 tools and applications

I recently downloaded a beta copy of JoikuSpot. It is a bit of software that turns any WiFi enabled Nokia smart phone into a WiFi access point, allowing you to surf the internet on a laptop when you don't have another internet connection (The internet back haul goes over your 3G subscription so it is best to be on an 'all you can eat' tariff).

To be honest, when I first downloaded it I thought it was more of a gimmick than a useful bit of software, but then I took a weeks holiday in a cottage in a remote part of North Wales with no Pub nearby, and bad TV reception. I could get a mobile signal (by propping my phone on the bathroom window ledge), so I was able to surf when there was nothing worth watching on the [b]three[b] TV channels available. I had previously tried getting internet access via normal dial up through my mobile but I found that impossible to set-up. In comparison JoikuSpot was very easy to setup.

FYI, I was using a Nokia E51, not an N95. I also work for Nokia.

    Re: N95 tools and applications

I was going to mension that one, but I didn't know the name, I saw it on some other site recently.

A friend was asking if I had something like that for my TyTN II last week. He was in the pub with a few friends and someone set that up on their TyTN II and everyone else shared the wifi on their phones and iPod Touch's. Geeky but cool

    Re: N95 tools and applications

I have Truphone for voip.. its very well intergrated into the N95 now.

Handy Taskman as the task manager (lets you know at a glance how much RAM/Mem etc you have left too)

    Google maps and Google mail.

Location tagger.. when running it tries to get a GPS lock when you take a photo and then attach it to the pictures EXIF data.

Nokia Maps 2.0(beta) - because i have a subscription to maps.. its one of those "handy" things to have

Coreplayer - for playing divx/xvids etc

Nokia Internet Radio... for when i fancy different music to listen to.

    Youtube mobile app (and emtube)

    Rotate me

Quake and Duke3d - to show off to piephone owners

Oh and the most important thing... latest firmware (v21.0.016 released this weekend just gone) that adds flash lite3 and some widget web runtime thing as well as the usual standby and memory improvements

edit: and the msn messenger client

    Re: N95 tools and applications

    Confused now.

    Mine brings up:

    V12.0.013
    19-06-07
    RM-159
    Nokia N95 (42.03)

    Does that tell me anything?

    Re: N95 tools and applications

Yes, the top line is the firmware edition so your's is

    V12.0.013

    Mine shows the following ;

    V20.0.015
    13-11-07
    RM-159
    Nokia N95 (01.01)

The last one might be different as I've 'fixed' the phone to the european 1 ID code and then flashed with the latest 20.0.0.015 firmware to remove the orange branding and menu's.
