    Best Sat Nav software for an N95 8gb / And resetting firmware.

    I'm getting my N95 8gb today and I had a couple of questions for you.

    The main reason I'm getting it, is for the Sat Nav capability, but I've read a lot about it and it sounds like there are lots of different "brands" of Sat Nav software for it. Like Garmin / Route 66 / TomTom / etc. I also read that it's not very good if you have it so it downloads the maps as you use it. In other words, it's best to have all the maps installed if possible.

    Anyway, if money is no object (kinda), which Sat Nav package would be the best to buy? I don't really mind what the costs are, I just want to know that if I have to go somewhere, it will get me there accurately and it won't freak out because I had to take a detour and it needs to download more of the map or something.

    Also, I read in another thread, that it's worth resetting it back to it's basic European firmware, instead of the phone company specific one that the phones come with. It makes the phone a bit more responsive and makes it use a bit less battery power and stuff. How would I go about doing that?

    Thanks =)

    I'm using the Garmin XT for the N95 and it's VERY good indeed.

    As for the firmware update etc - which model of N95 have you got? The standard mark 1 or the new 8 Gb as each is slightly different in the codes you need to use.

    Read the following as this gives links to the software and the 'codes' you need ;

    Tomtom will work - but not with the inbuilt GPS for some reason. If you have a solar powered GPS reciever like the one we sell, then tomtom works happily on the N95.

    Nokia Navigator uses Route 66, wife used it to travel when she was doing training for work. Really good and pretty up to date I must admit.

    Not overly keen on the Nokia maps that comes on the N95, going to be putting Route 66 on there when I get a chance.

    Garmin Mobile TX = dogs nadgers for Symbian phones... it's better than Tom Tom, i've used both extensively. Only difference is Garmin XT is more of a pain to setup depending on which er... "version" you get.

    Thanks all of you

    It's the new 8gb version. I can't believe how great it is :O The screen is like a TV.

    I'm just going to make a copy of all my contacts and then first thing I'll do is get rid of all the Orange crap, and see if there is any firmware update for it, and give it a good charge. Then I'll look into getting Garmin XT tomorrow

    Ahh the hack thingy voids warrenty so I might skip that. I set the themes to basic Nokia and it seems pretty good now anyway. So I'm just gunna get it charged up and then get the sat nav stuff tomorrow.

    Aye good move, acrobat. I re-flashed my N95 8GB and about a week later it developed a hardware fault (totally unrelated of course). I was bricking it in case they noticed when I RMA'ed it! Happily it was all done in-store (phones4u) and they don't check these things

    Good to hear you got it on Orange. I've been waiting for them to get it for a while. Last time I called they still didn't have it in! Is it me or have Orange become really crap at getting the latest models? Ideally I'd wait for the N96 but no doubt Orange won't get it until some time in 2009!

    acrobat, if you want it to be faster then just disable the shortcut. everything seems to fly since i did that but then its kinda pointless cuz the shortcuts are really helpful sometimes

    I can happily report that the firmware 21.0.0.016 opens folders of images and songs a lot quicker than the 20 revision.

    It also reports all the mp3's on the memory card as well now as just opposed to the ones on the phone memory

    I updated mine yesterday while still in a drunken haze, hence the edit with the comments about "contacts" as I lost all mine lol

    Yeah I desperately wanted the 96 but I had to order it right away. It seems really good anyway, and no doubt I can just upgrade it again in a year or whatever.

    Oh cool, thanks. I still haven't finished getting my music and stuff on it yet so haven't got around to doing the Sat Nav yet.

    Which shortcut is that? I'm still pretty newbyish with the phone. Only thing I've done so far is put my own music on, and I changed the "Theme" to Nokia series 4 or something, rather than the Orange theme.

    Is that a proper firmware? Or something that has to be done on a cracked phone? I'd love to make it quicker if I could, but don't wanna void my warranty.
