    Phone upgrade decisions

Got a phonecall today from Vodafone offering me an upgrade to my phone (k800i), and the main phone the guy was offering was the Samsung Tocco F480. I haven't really kept up to date with the latest phones for a while, anyone got one of these or can recommend some decent phones to look at?

I've been with vodafone for years, but always tended to be on their minimum tariff which has always covered what I needed it for. I've thought about switching to PAYG, but I've always liked to have a newish phone, and it seemed to work out cheaper with a contract (£15/month) than paying through the teeth for a phone without one. In the past I have always phoned up Vodafone cancellations and bagged myself a decent deal to make it worthwhile, but this is the first time they have phoned me to offer an upgrade.

Thing is I don't tend to use many of the features on these phones, but am a bit of a sucker for wanting the latest trendy gadgets out there. I want a camera on it, but if I want to take a decent picture then i'll use my digital camera, so I'm not sold on how many megapixels it can offer, for example.

I have been keeping an eye on the new iPhone release, but I am not interested in some weighty monthly contract. Ideally I'd prefer to get the phone and just jailbreak it onto my current contract (which vodafone will reduce in price instead of taking a new phone), but then nobody seems to know yet if that will be possible with the new one.

The guy from vodafone obviously tried to sell this Samsung phone to me as being better than the iPhone. They want me to sign up to a new 18 month contract plus £50-75 for the phone, which I expect I can knock them down on.

I noticed there wasn't any mention of this phone in these forums already, so was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it or other phones to look at?

Jailbraking the new iPhone will be possible. I am sure the guys will find a way round it. As swish as the iPhone looks, personally it doesn't beat the Nokia N95. I have had my N95 since day 1 of release and its been solid. Come September I don't know what to replace it with, and that would have been 18 months. No way am I going for another 18 month contract though.

    Re: Phone upgrade decisions

Tocco is a nice phone. K800i has been out for ages. I would ask them what else is available to be honest. See if you can get a F490 out of them as they have just been discontinued in the last week or 2 after a really short 2 month life span!

Another thing you could ask for is a 2nd hand phone (Possibly the Samsung F490 again). 2nd hand phones are contract and upgrade cancellations that will have only been used for a maximum of 2 weeks. So you are getting a virtually brand new phone, but you should get it completely free.

You didn't hear that from me though!!!

    Re: Phone upgrade decisions

I was reading about the F490 and the difference between that and the F480 (Tocco), is basically the F490 has a bigger screen and the Tocco has better features (FM radio, faster 3G, more memory). Also been reading some user comments, and some rate it as one of the best phones out there, yet plenty of others say its quite bad particularly the volume and quality of a phonecall The LG Viewty gets a fair number of mentions as an alternative, as does the N95, however a mate has the N95 and i'd like something different

I'm thinking I might hold off for a bit and see what options I might have with the new iPhone.

    Re: Phone upgrade decisions

If your m8 has the N95, you could always go with the N95 8GB. Same phone but looks different.
You wont regret getting the n95 though!
