    Haggling...

I'm upgrading my phone and price plan with T-Mobile at the end of this month, I don't fancy paying for a new phone so I'm obviously hoping to get the Nokia N96 at the very least for about £50.

My missus also recently upgraded her phone with Orange and she managed to get a tenner deducted from her line rental plus a new phone when she threatened to leave them for o2, she also managed to get a fiver off line rental for me and unlimited free calls to her if I joined, a free phone comes with the price plan anyway.

I've been with T-Mobile for about 9 years and I've had the same number for about 7 years, I've ALWAYS paid my bills on time without fail in all that time but I think I'll leave T-Mobile for Orange if they aren't going to meet me somewhere in the middle in terms of haggling even though they haven't provided particulary horrendous service to me, they have slipped over the years but the grass may not be any greener with the other networks...might be worse even, LOL

What do y'all think I should do chaps and chapettes?

Also, I'm going to buy an Eee PC 901 with the view to getting a mobile broadband deal to latch onto my current price plan, but at £10-15 per month, thats shockingly bad value for money so what are the alternatives, I could just get a "web 'n walk" deal for my phone and just tether it to the laptop...

    Re: Haggling...

Ring them up and see what happens, try not to threaten them with leaving. You might get what you need without that. If all else fails then pull the "i will leave" card. They will know your loyalty with them and should give in to your demands. If not well they obviously don't want your money, don't forget you can also haggle as a new customer so you could get an even better deal by moving.

    Re: Haggling...

Yeah, by all means have a good haggle, they always have some scope for discounts. It can all depend on the person you get through to though. I've tried to haggle with one person with no joy, then called back half an hour later and got someone more sympathetic!

I've always found that a little research helps a lot, as if you can say why you're threatening to leave your current supplier, they always take you more seriously than if you simply threaten to leave. If you can show them that 1 or 2 of their competitors have better deals, they're always more liable to yield.

It doesn't pay to be too demanding in my experience though, especially if you're wanting something like the N96. Do you mean you want it free on a £50 contract? You probably have a good chance of getting one if so, and if it's an 18 month contract, but you may have to wait a little, as it's not even out yet (last I checked) so chances of getting a great deal are always slight at launch.

I wanted an N95 when it launched, and had been with Vodafone for 15 years. I got nowhere in getting one for under £100, even with threatening to leave. Demand for the handset was far outstripping supply, so they had no need to give me one cheap. So I just kept my existing tarriff for a couple of months, and didn't upgrade until they offered me the N95 for free, with a few discounts too

I too fancy the N96, but from what I've read it's going to be even more expensive than the N95 was And if it's anything like the 95 was, there'll no doubt be the odd niggle too

    Good luck!

    Re: Haggling...

Some good advise, I'm prepared to spend £100 tops for the N96 when it decides that it wants to come out for god's sake, lol, I'm pretty sure they won't cut me a good deal on the simple basis that I want to cancel my contract.

    Re: Haggling...

O2 have been really keen to keep my business in the past, until i moved to t-mobile that is.

Twice O2 offered me deals when I wanted to move, the first time I took them up on it. The second they just couldn't match t-mobile, it wasn't possible for them to (O2 don't have a roaming agreement in Angola and cannot route calls from the UK over there even though my parents in Angola could call me).

I would guess other operators will be the same, the deal you get by their retentions department is all based on how valuable a customer you are to them. I think i was valuable to O2 because i hardly used any of my free minutes or texts in a month but also roamed a lot o some billa were quite high.
