    N96 or N95 8GB?

I'm going to renew my contract with O2 on Monday and have got it down to either the N95 8Gb or N96. I've used N series phones ever since the NGAGE (if you could call that an N series?) and currently have an N73 so I'm happy to stay. From my investigations the difference between the N96 and its older brother seems to be very minor (latest N95 firmware has flash lite 3 and A-GPS. The BBC iplayer app is available on both as well.)

Can anyone who has these two phones (with the latest firmware) recommend one over the other? I can get the N95 on a £35 a month contract, the N96 is £45 so you can see why I'm considering the older phone.

    Thanks!

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

i thought the iplayer was only available on n96? i have a 95 and i can't get it *goes off to double check my firmware*

btw i'm very happy with the n95 had it for nearly 2 years now (20/21 months i think) and it's a very solid phone, although if i were you i think i would go with a 95 just to save yourself that extra tenner a month

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

right so i've updated my firmware and cannot get the video across to the phone. the iplayer site states you can only use n96 as it supports open media alliance DRM (link here)

so unless there's some hack for the n95 where you can get this open media alliance DRM or whatever it is then i don't think you can use the iplayer service for that model

    Check out: http://briskoda.net/tech-shed/iplayer-n95/124559/

This where an iplayer SIS app is mentioned. Be interesting to know how well it works.

I believe this is the same method N96 uses (Think its Real based)

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

pff spent a few hours looking into this and tbh, i'm not that fussed any more that i can't use iplayer on my phone! if you follow the link you provided and look at the forum topic you'll see that the beeb stopped supporting the n95 recently and after a few modifications you can only stream to the phone, no more downloading

Ok. Sorry it didn't work. Something I was quite interested in - maybe I need to try and persuade them to give me a N96 on the £35 a month contract...

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

I've got the N95 8GB and have used the N96, personally I dont like the way it feels with all those smooth edges, feels like it may slip any time, dont get me wrong its a great phone, although the N95 is more of the square finish and feels like your actually holding a phone, the 16gb does sound appealing, although I still prefer an ipod for my music. I personally couldnt notice too much difference between the cameras although there are many comparisons online. Good Luck!

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

I use the N95 original and have the iPlayer app installed and it does work using 21.0.016 firmware.

However, I can only stream over wifi and you can't use the download feature, but I can catagorically state that I've watched content on it!

As far as choosing which phone, they look pretty similar in specs to me, in fact the N96 seems more of an N95i to me!

    Have you considered the N85?

ive had iplayer on my n95 8gb for months! ever since my mate got a new n96 and said the n95 simply wasnt powerful enough to cope (idiot) still using the v20.0.016 firmware aswell. you can only stream though, downloads do not play!

The N96 is more like an N95- in truth though. Slower CPU (260mHz versus 330), no graphics accelerator, but more embedded memory. N85 has a faster processor (369mHz), but no graphics accelerator.

Although there aren't many games that use the accelerator, with Nokia having stated that the N-Gage platform will be supporting it soon, Nokias removal of that hardware from their latest kit is a surprising decision.

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

I played with an N95 8GB & N96 in store and in the end went for the N95 8GB just becuase it felt a bit faster and more responsive. I've had it for a couple of months now and can truthfully say it's the best phone I've ever had (although my last few were MS Smartphones i.e. crap, so maybe skewing my vision slightly). I've stuck with the v20 firmware as a friend upgraded to v30 and experienced a significant slowdown of the interface.

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

Sorry hadn't visited this thread for a week. Got a N96 after reading many reviews. I know the early firmware had some speed issues etc but I updated mine straight away and its been lightning fast compared to my old n73. Also I think the CPU issue is a little more clouded as the N95 is ARM11, the N96 ARM9 so I don't think its sensible to compare clock speeds.

I've found BBC iplayer works great and the GPS is near instant locking on (compared to my old GPS PDA which took 2 mins+).

Also I was able to get 30% off the contract through a friend who works for O2 so at £31 a month including unlimited web I'm quite happy. I just need to find a cheap copy of tomtom now.

    Re: N96 or N95 8GB?

i would go for n95 8gb, ive got it and i love it. there's no real differences. however the n95 8gb has poor battery life so check that out in regards to the n96. Also get the skyfire app, it's excellent for the internet.

Not used Skyfire, butg have Opera installed as well. Generally though I find that the built in browser isn't really that bad.
