Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

Wi-Fi is completely free to log onto a router at home or somewhere like McD's or BK where it is advertised as free. However, logging onto Cloud or BT Openzone still carries a fair usage policy as you are logging onto something that is set up with the companies as an extra for the IPhone. So if you start hammering those 2 wireless networks it would be reported back to O2 and you would be charged accordingly.

Roaming is when you use a UK device in another country (or country other than where the phone was purchased), call charges have come down after reports of unfair prices etc. Trouble is though, data has not come down and is really expensive. Can cost as much as £5 per mb or more depending on the country.

Whenever you see unlimited with any of the mobile operators there is always a fair usage policy in effect in the small print. Regardless of whether it is SMS messages, data or wi-fi.

Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

I hope this isn't all true. I've just taken out a new O2 contract (with an N96) with a free unlimited web bolt on. While I'm not planning on using the phone as a modem I was expecting to be able to use an email client (with regular downloads) and a decent browser that would provide a real web site experience (not this cruddy wap junk).

I've been quite enjoying it so far (3 days) - Proper facebook site looks great in Opera mini. I hope this doesn't mean they'll think I've been using it as a modem...

Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

N96 is fine with the unlimited web, if you want to setup a push service for mail that is also fine. This whole thing is using a phone as a modem which you have said you are not so you have nothing to worry about!

Image downscaling on a PC doesn't happen so it will use a lot more data more quickly, not forgetting flash animated adverts. On a mobile in most cases they are stopped or blocked completely by the mobile browser.
Many mobile phone browsers (e.g Opera) do flash ads, youtube etc. I easily went over 30-40mb after playing around for an hour with it. Mobile browsing consumes almost exactly the same amount of data as PC browsing if you have a good mobile/browser...

the new Mobile IE6 also done complete web page downloads just like a regular browser. It's supposed to be very good, so much so that ROM cookers on XDA-Devs are dropping Opera for IE6.

Have you tried Skyfire? That is meant to be really good too. Doesn't support WVGA yet though

Isn't that the one with the really bad EULA that effectively gives them access to all the data you access through it?

Don't know, but apparently it can load almost 100% of webpages properly. Flash/Ajax etc all works

Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

i occasionally use my mobile as a modem and use the 3g. i try to avoid it as much as possible though simply because, as already stated, it consumes a lot of data i was online for about 20 minutes using my phone and i had downloaded a good 50mb and that was just generally messing about and ordering a few bits! thats a lot of data to use so quickly considering my 'unlimited' tariff only goes upto a gb i think it is for 02 now?

Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

I'd like to use my iphone as a modem, but given the T's & C's I've not done so. There is some talk of AT&T in the states allowing users to do this although I think there may be an additional charge - something I'd be happy to pay if O2 were to take this approach providing it was reasonable.

On a seperate issue jailbroken phones can hoover down a lot of data quite quickly via cydia etc, I wonder how O2 deal with this?

Anything developed for the piephone will still be written with size in mind.. and considering the latest FW Apple have allowed itunes and Podcasts to be downloaded over 3g O2 cant really be worried about that.

Plus its only recently that O2 have started to open up the 3.5g speeds. Does anyone have an official note to what the speed actually is now?.. im thinking its somewhere between 2 and 4 meg dependant on location...

I've seen apps on cydia hitting 90mb+ Apple wont let you download anything from the Appstore over 10mb, so it must be an issue for someone?

Re: iPhone on O2 is unlimited data usage?

I'm using a 3G USB stick in conjunction with a Billion 3G/ADSL Router as fail-over for when the BT line craps out- 3 were the only company who would sell me a decent package..

If I wanted to download a lot on an iPhone, I'd certainly not be looking at O2 at the moment - I'm running t-mobile's web and walk unlimited sim in an unlocked PAYG 3G iPhone
