Best phone on T-Mobile Flext Contract?

    Need some advice really.

I have been looking about for a new phone as mine is due an upgrade come the end of the month but I am uncertain as to which one is the most reliable and suited to my needs. I have always prefered the smaller phones as I can just chuck it in the pocket and forget about it. However over the last year I have found myself using the phone a lot more for browsing the web and checking emails and msn on the move etc.

I currently have a SE 902 phone and the screen is a little to small for good use whilst browsing about on the web n walk with opera mini. I was looking at the Google Android phone as that is available on t-mobile free as an upgrade but I do not know anyone with on or who uses it on a daily basis. How big is the phone in general? I would go check this but the local t-mobile store doesn't have it on show

Any other phones I should be considering from anyone here on T-Mobile with a decent sized screen for browsing the web? Looking through their website atm for the offers they have and phones their selection seems rather limited to a handful of phones that are good phones but not catered towards the net bar the android.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    t-mobile mda vario 3?
    (aka HTC Kaiser)

Good all round phone, more PDA then anything but a lot of fun to use with web/msn etc. Winmo also lets you install a huge variety of programs on it aswell!

A friend at work has the android phone and loves it. if your a proper geek then you`ll love the stuff that you can do with it.

If you want a phone just for normal phone stuff then its prolly not the best to use.

If you want to be able to do crazy stuff with it then the android is the daddy my friend at work has managed to get google maps api working on his phone so that he can show his position live on maps which can be viewed from any browser anywhere

    HTC Kaiser/MDA Vario 3 > t-mobile G1

    Android > Windows Mobile

All depends on which one you want to sacrifice, hardware v software!

    (IMO anyway)

Re: Best phone on T-Mobile Flext Contract?

Ideally I need something that has a larger screen than the current SE 902, which isn't hard to find as the screen on the SE is tiny.

Most the time I am on the web n walk reading emails, msn, browsing when I am on the move etc. I was tempted by the Android as I tend to use gmail, google calendar and docs a hell of a lot so was sort of expecting the google based phone to work well with their services

Will have a look around for reviews and vids on the HTC Kaiser.

    Thanks for the info.

    if you go down the kaiser route;
    http://forums.hexus.net/mobile-phone...vario-iii.html
    http://forums.hexus.net/mobile-phone...d-i-start.html

Two of my mates have the g1 and they love it, but i dont like the hardware side of it at all, the MDA vario 3 is much nicer to use, just a shame Windows mobile isnt as good as Android. That being said, Windows mobile 6.5 should be out in a few months & then Windows Mobile 7 next year-ish. Both will be dead easy to put on your kaiser.

(kaiser = production name/HTC name for the phone, MDA Vario 3 is just the t-mobile branded version)

over at XDA, they are working on porting android to the kaiser and got it up and running(just a few things left to do) so you can have the best of both worlds.

I have the kaiser and still run windows mobile. It's great to use if you get a better rom and run Manilla 2d.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Re: Best phone on T-Mobile Flext Contract?

Just got the android phone and msut admit I am loving it I am on the phone now and its a dream to use, just need to get the settings sorted as the battery life is poor on it but that could be due to me always on it and searching the net etc.

Only thing I am missing is an MSN app for it so far, managed to find plenty replacements on the free android market for the other apps I used on the old phone.

Thanks to all who gave advice was going for the kaiser but work got us the HTC 8500 pda phones which gives me the best of both worlds atm

    Thanks once again.

Re: Best phone on T-Mobile Flext Contract?

I went from a Kaiser to the G1. I had hardware issues with the Kaiser and the out of the box firmware is rubbish. My first one I changed the firmware and that improved things massively, but the keyboard stopped working. Luckily I could still re-flash the original firmware as you break your warranty by changing it.

When the replacement came I decided I better not risk running a custom firmware again as I was worried about the reliability and the warranty. This meant I got loads of dropped connection issues as it loses calls coming through on 3G as signal drops and it trys to change to 2G. On a business phone, dropping one in three calls is not too clever. This is a known issue with the firmware and was remedied (to a reasonable extent) about 12 months ago by HTC, Orange and every other reseller of the phone apart from T-Mobile. I contacted them numerous times about it and they just kept saying that if I installed my own firmware then I wouldn't have a warranty and that they were not releasing an official solution.

I eventually got them to change my phone for a G1 as the Kaiser was not fit for purpose (i.e. you had to set it to 2G to make a remotely reliable phone call). As such I can happily tell you the main benefits:

G1: Phone works better for calls out the box, slimmer and more attractive looking, bigger screen, far better default interface, far easier to get a good selection of free software on it, regularly updated and improving, has a number row on keypad.

Vario: Potentially better interface and applications available (need to invalidate warranty for this though), better battery life (G1 barely makes it through the day with 3G and bluetooth on, never mind WiFi or GPS), more powerful system (though again on default firmware you would struggle to notice this compared to the G1), can be used as a modem out the box (G1 is on custom firmwares to do this)

If you are happy with no warranty and lots of time on the internet researching firmwares, software, etc, then it is hard to knock the Vario other than it looking less chic. The G1 is no I-Phone in the looks department either, but definitely has the edge of the two. If you don't want to invalidate your warranty and spend lots of time getting the phone just right though, the G1 is far better than a stock Vario. Obviously this is just my opinion, but it is based on having a G1 since launch and two Kaisers for the 12 months before that (again pretty much from launch).
