    So...anyone got a Nokia 5800 yet?

I've been eyeing this one up for a bit now, always been a SonyEricsson man myself & currently on an XDA Orbit 2 but I fancy a change. GSMarena gives it an 'ok' write-up but there's no substitute for real opinions!

I'm sure I saw on the phons4u price tag this was £200 on O2 P&Go, I'm sure this is an error but if not I'm tempted guys!

so, anyone gone for one yet?

Well, I got one on upgrade on Vodafone, and the next day delivery has been cut to pieces because of the weather - Thats 2 days late now (Though I understand why. I not that evil to want people to drive in these conditions!!!)... Not sure when I will get it now... I have an N95 now, but really like the combination of features and form factor. The kicker will be how I get along with the touch screen, but will let you know when I actually get it

    Re: So...anyone got a Nokia 5800 yet?

Just picked mine up from the delivery depot, seeing as its been delayed for over 3 days now... There was no way I would have had the patience to wait over the weekend! Need a new toy to play with

Just opening now - will post back findings soon...

    JP

EDIT: Well - had a decent go on it yesterday and quite impressed with it. I found the touchscreen to be ok for texting (you can increase the amount of haptic feedback when you touch a key which helps) although nowhere near as quick as with the N95. Its quick and responsive in the menus, and been having a decent play with the iplayer/bbc sport/facebook/youtube mobile apps/links and they seem to work well on 3.5g (Just got an unlimited data bundle) and wifi.

They could have made better use of the main screen, and its not as customisable as I'd like - think they held that back for the N97 - but I the proof will be in using is in normal circumstances. Still waiting for my Martin Fields screen protector (Best bar none IMO used on all my phones for the last 5 years) but until then, not risking ruining that nice screen!

The audio is fairly decent, though I dont really use it as I have an ipod, but chucked a few faves on there and seems to be fine. The camera seems to be disctinctly different from my N95, but I guess it is a step down. Just more noise than I would have liked really. Video is the same - I guess the sensor in the phone isnt great - but the biggest pain is the fact that the video seems to be really zoomed in... Those who have it, look at a scene with the camera, then change to video, its like you have zoomed in 10%... Bit annoying, but meh - maybe these issues could get improved with firmware.

Also, not really liking the default theme - which is the only one they provide... Its a bit too dark and the icons look terrible. Wish they looked more like the default N95 one... Might have to have a dabble and create it myself when I get some time...

@Destroyer - didnt think that you had to press that hard with the finger, but I guess that I'm not trying to use the flat of my finger too much, a bit more of a point, but withough using my nail. Probably because its a resistive touch screen, the more the pressure is spread the less chance it'll respond. You still getting on fine with it?

Check out this forum for help/tips too - it was great for my N95, and now the 5800 sub forum is growing daily. Good links to apps and tips there

How is it typing on the qwerty keyboard with your fingers?
It looks pretty fiddly in the videos I've seen.

Is it "doable" using two thumbs?
    ta!

Personally, I think no. I by no means have the biggest thumbs but I found it a bit fiddly. I get on much better with the alphanumeric input (ie. T9 like a normal keypad) and am probably just as fast now as I used to be.

However, maybe its just due to the fact that I've never had a qwerty input phone before, so my finger movements aren't so accurate. The buttons could be bigger, and there is vibration and letter enlargment feedback, but personally, its not for me. Just measured the screen for you and its 7x4 cm so it depends on the size you are expecting.

Also, just took this for you to see the scale - click pic on the other page for the larger version...

The screen is pretty responsive for a resistive touchscreen, so you dont need to use a nail or anything to press, but angling thumbs slightly would help.

Let me know if you have any questions!

PS - Yes that is the cover still on there. Been waiting for my Martin Fields Screen Protecter to arrive. And it has - so will be getting that on there in a few minutes methinks...

    cheers, looks nice!
My contract runs out in July, so'll be looking for a new phone then.
Everyone at work keeps flashing round their iphones and google-phones, but
I've always been a nokia guy.

Still got a while to decide!

Also worth considering the N97 and the forthcoming Samsung i8910.

Both running the same operating system as the 5800, but the N97 adds a keyboard, 32gig on-board, digital compass and a 5mp camera.

The Samsung i8910 adds 16gig on board (apparently), 8mp camera, HD video recording (1280x720), and has "HDMI" written on the back - so may actually offer true HD video TV output. It also supports Divx out of the box.

    Re: So...anyone got a Nokia 5800 yet?

The N97 is definitely better spec wise, but it depends on whether not you can live with the dimensions and weight of it. Personally, I can't take a full qwerty, but its down to you. The 5800 is relatively slim and can be operated one handed for most things. I guess that cost is also an issue. The N97 is going to be dead expensive what with it being an N-series, and the 5800, for all its flaws, its good value for money. Of course i'm biased :-) but it depends on what you want from a phone and what you are willing to pay.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to go bigger than the E51 I have now. The 5800 seems similar in size to that.

    Re: So...anyone got a Nokia 5800 yet?

Has anyone used a Viewty in here? The 5800 seems pretty cheap for me and has a rather large screen and is a music phone. I might consider getting one but I'm not sure if it would be a worthwhile upgrade from the Viewty as it could end up being a downgrade altogether.

I've used one but not a 5800, personally couldn't stand the viewty so I sent it back (was an upgrade) Feature set is obviously far superior, you can get one for under £240 so what would your old phone fetch if you sold it?!
