What would you have instead of an iPhone?

    Hi everyone,

I am finally in the market for a new phone. I've always liked the iPhone, but don't want to commit to one at the moment as there may be a new one soon. I'm also aware that lots and lots of people really dislike the iPhone, so what would you suggest instead of it? What's out there that's really good?

Also, I'm not a huge fan of WinMo (because I'm under the impression it's quite fiddly) and I definitely don't ever want to use a stylus!

How about the Vodafone Google phone, the HTC Magic?

    Cheers!

Re: What would you have instead of an iPhone?

with a win mobile(like the htc touch HD) you can always put an iphone skin on it so it looks and acts like iphone. Also there are loads of on screen keyboards etc you can pick from so you won't have to use the stylus ever if you don't want to.
Windows mobile is not fiddly at all. the only thing you need to do is replace the stock firmware with another(see xda-developers for more info), which will take about 5 minutes and be fine from then on(not sluggish or fiddly at all).

Best thing I like about windows mobile is that you can tweak and change it as much or as little as you want to(if you want to) and if there is anything you don't like, then you can change it.

1 thing that astounds me about the iphone is that they still cannot do something as basic as send mms messages. Basic phones could do this over 5 years ago.

BTW, there are ports of android being made for windows mobile phones so u can always put this on if you wanted to.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that windows mobile gives you the most flexibility to do anything you want to
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Re: What would you have instead of an iPhone?

Well iirc the Iphone uses the same touch technology as the Itouch, my friend got the latter and he loves it but i just never got on with the touch screen as it seemed quite unresponsive which is probably due to my preference of pressure based.

I got the LG Renoir from dial a phone on contract 12months vodafone with 150mins/600text which is £14~(13.70 lol) p/m. So far i am incredibly happy with it, touch screen for me seems very responsive and the phones camera is great(compared to phones not dedicated cams) along with media playback (videos) and the music player seems to be almost as good as my sandisk sansa clip(very good player).

There is some lag with the phone but its not really bad, i got a custom firmware on it now which reduces it alot but its still there slightly albeit its not as laggy as the samsung tocco that i almost bought . Tech specs its not as good as the Iphone which has a 400mhz cpu compared to the 150mhz(renoir, google says ) but it does give it a run for its money. The major flaw with the renoir is the lack of apps which is where the iphone/touch wins hands down but thats all i have found at this time(just over a month using it).

lowest price for the renoir i saw was £200 unlocked at play.com.

Cookie is said to be an amazing touch screen phone but depends what you want it for, media playback? Camera? Basic phone?.

Hmmm, okay. You've made a good argument for Windows Mobile, perhaps I should have a look at them then. What handsets would you recommend?

    Diamond Touch 2

Brand new. Owesome looking device. It'll be my next handset as soon as T-Mobile get their finger out and offer it.

Re: What would you have instead of an iPhone?

I didn't mind the stylus part but wanted a qwerty keyboard so I got the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Good handset with an 800x480 screen.

Though I'd be tempted to follow Funkstars recommendation if hadn't chosen the X1.

Re: What would you have instead of an iPhone?

I might have been tempted with the X1 or the Touch Pro 2, but I realised I don't use the keyboard on my TyTN II anymore, so there is little point is carrying about such a heavy phone now.

I also really like HTCs new Touch Flow.

Re: What would you have instead of an iPhone?

Yea, I've had the X1 a month now. Really good phone - nippy enough that it doesn't lag under WinMo with enough features and customisations to keep me occupied for a while. Oh, and with new ROMs for it, virtually endless customisation.

Build quality wise, it is like any other HTC product - solidly built (HTC make the phone for SE) with a nice clear screen and good battery life. It isn't overly heavy, and is not a lot bigger or heavier than the 8600 Luna it replaced, or the K800i which is my spare/backup.

I'd recommend it, very good phone, and very powerful if required.

I like the Blackberry Curve. The little roller ball seemed a better way to navigate through screens, than touching it with the iPhone, but that's just me.

HTC Touch HD or Samsung Omnia. Both on Windows Mobile. No problems with sat nav, tomtom, Gramin, etc.

Only problem I came across with any of the blackberrys is the email. You have to pay for blackberry email which is about £5 per month on top of normal mobile internet charge.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

N97 is coming in the next 2-3 months and I'm looking to pick one up. Symbian OS is stable, powerful and more than anything, a mature platform with a massive community. An array of apps and S60 v5 built on top make it my choice. Great specs too, 5mp cam, 32gb internal mem and all the usual S60 stuff makes it a top device.

id say anything, i hate all apple stuff as they are money grabbing theifs

as a good constructive alternative have a look at samsung amnia HD, its not out right now but i have heard so many good things about it, and it has got OLED screen which makes it look amazing. not to mention a 720p built in video camera
