    Do I need mobile broadband

I recently upgraded to the xda guide with o2 on their £35 a month tariff with free web bolt on, which I am really enjoying using, but I feel I'm only just getting to grips with it's capabilities (the guide that is). I noticed that I could use it as a modem to connect to the internet, but I also have a mobile broadband with o2. Question is do I need the mobile broadband or could I get away with just my laptop connected through my phone?

Also while I'm here are there any must have aps for a windows mobile phone?

    Thanks

    Andy

Not sure if you may be breaking the terms of service if you tether (some networks don't like it) though I guess you'd at least be entitled to a warning if it did breach the ToS.

As far as apps go, I'm afraid I'm a bit rusty on that side of things. The ones I use most frequently personally are:

    # mobipocket (for eBooks - Tor were doing a giveaway a few months back so I got a load of free sci-fi/fantasy books; I find that I really enjoy reading using the pocket PC - less bulky than a normal book and I don't lose my place )
    # Audible (for audiobooks)

So a bit book oriented Of course there's the occasional web use (I use a bit of Pocket IE and Opera for that), and I do use it for personal e-mail when I'm on the move; for that I use FlexMail which I find pretty good when hooked up to gmail via IMAP.

If you're after a resource for PocketPC, I've always found www.modaco.com pretty good. It's Windows Mobile oriented and I've always found people there pretty helpful (there are loads of 'Must have' threads, and there's probably one dedicated to your phone).

I just got a contract with O2 and can confirm that tethering your phone to your laptop to use as a modem (even with the "unlimited" web bolt-on) is against the T&Cs.

Whether or not you could get away with it, I'm not sure.

If you use it for things like email/internet browsing they probably wont notice

Failing that 3 have their dongle on PAYG for £5 inc P&P atm (look on the moneysavingexpert site) but I wouldnt reccomend it unless you use it quite often in spurts e.g. use it for a month then not etc

Re: Do I need mobile broadband

I work for O2 and can definately confirm that it is breaking the T&C's of your contract. Our systems can track the data and see exactly how it is being used and you could end up getting charged for the data to the nearest kb.

Personally would stick with the MBB, if its payg at least you have the option of daily usage which is £2 for a 24Hr period with 500 Mb data across the network and unlimited data on The Cloud and BT Openzone wifi hotspots.

i could see it would be useful if away from home and wanted an internet connection on a laptop.

i have made use of a tethered mobile in the past for such a purpose. very nice when no other means of accessing the internet is available.
