    HTC Touch Diamond 2

    Well, I just ordered one

Debated with myself for a while, but just bit the bullet and ordered one from Play.com. I know you can get the a few quid cheaper from other places, but basically I trust them to deliver it quickly. I also got £14 cash back on Quidco

Looking forward to replacing my TyTN II. It will be a shame to use a standard ROM again, but then at least it isn't a carrier specific one!

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

Not yet. But HTC have said there will be upgrade for all their new devices.

Thats actually one little reason I'm happy to go for the HTC instead of waiting for the T-Mobile Compact V. I personally doubt t-mobile will update the ROM, or if they do, I don't think they will push it down to existing owners.

Not to mension the fact that I couldn't be assed waiting for them to actually release the Compact V

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

I've had one for just over a week and absolutely love it. The OSK is excellent and very accurate in portrait mode (I don't really use it in landscape), the suretype sort of thing is also very handy for quickly selecting common words.

I'm very pleased with the camera, though the lack of flash can make low-light pictures somewhat disappointing (even an LED would have helped). Taking pictures in well-lit areas/outdoors has been great fun, since my last phone was a Blackberry 8820 which didn't even have a camera!

Here are a couple of sample shots (scaled down with a touch of jpeg compression):

    Outside:
    http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5198584_n.jpg

    Inside (sunny day):
    http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1722499_n.jpg

The phone is plenty powerful - seems to be a damned site more efficient that my old x51v PDA. I've even been able to play DVD-resolution divx encoded files (in coreplayer) - which are displayed splendidly by the screen.

Internet browsing is great with Opera, as usual, and the zoom touch thingy is quite useful. I haven't had a good play with the push internet thing yet though. Not even sure what it does! The Youtube application is great as long as you're either in a wifi hotspot or have a good 3G signal. If you can only connect with GPRS, then you may as well just play Teeter (which I've been stuck on for 3 days now).

There are a few things I don't like about it - the shiny back cover is a bit tacky and feels like it would smash if I put it down too hard, the inbuilt speaker isn't particularly loud, and the only output is the ext-USB port.

Battery life is OK - I tend to charge it up every two days and that's with having wifi constantly enabled and constantly messing with it.

I got the touch cruise 09 the other day, and i love it to bits, my first windows mobile phone and it's really good to use. Just one annoyance which is that I can't add Durham to the weather, trying a few work arounds from xda-developers though none work yet. The sat nav is really handy to have too, although the quickest and shortest routes from my home to work are neither the quickest or shortest

Looking on the Windows Mobile training site it is just saying Summer this year for 6.5. I wouldn't be surprised if they launched it around the same time as the version 3 software for the iPhone

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

Well i've lived with this for the weekend and I have to say, it's bloomin fantastic!

I've only had to drop inot the Windows Mobile screens twice. First was to turn off the proxy seting T-Mobile push down to the phone (prevents you using HTTPS and syncing over the air with your SSL protected Exchange server), and to change the text received tone. The call received ring is part of the HTC TouchFlow 3D interface.

Moving to this from the TyTN II has been amazing. Sooooo much thinner and lighter. The touch screen is far more responsive, brighter, more colourful and of course much higher resolution.

I thought I would miss the hard buttons at the bottom of the front, but you really don't, and the zoom bar works extremely well, especially with Opera, which is also a great browser.

HTC have done a really good job of the interface. The email interface is esentially left as standard, but they have upped the text size so it actually becomes finger friendly, yet becasue of the screen resolution you still get enough on screen at a time.

Something I was concerned about, that wasn't in any of the reviews I'd seen was the time and alarm settings. I'm releaved to say that this is all handled by TouchFlow so i no longer need to get the stylus out to set alarms etc.

BlueTooth pairing is also all handled by TouchFlow. So really in day to day use, unless you have apps you use that use the standard interface, pulling the stylus out is going to be a vary rare occurance.

My mum asked me what I was doing with my old handset, I refused to give her it, it would be a bit too complicated for her. This one on the other hand is just a damned good phone regardless of being a Smartphone.

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

It's a lovely phone isn't it? I've had mine for a few weeks now and i've very happy with it!

The one thing I have done is abandon touchflo 3d as my primary UI - it's very pretty but it's actually nowhere near as good as SPB Mobile Shell 3 (which I've had before). I stuck out with TF3D for a couple of weeks (mainly because it was so pretty) but now i've made the switch it's much, much better (as I can now setup the device exactly how i'd like it). You can disable the TF3D plugin for the today screen and you still get all the other HTC hacks for menus etc so it's really win-win.

    http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/

The other thing worth mentioning is that the ATI graphics in this phone are 3D capable and with the correct driver you can get a massive jump in performance: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...=ATI+3d+driver

Try lights.exe without the driver and then with - it's remarkable. Ignore the Omnia stuff - just use the ati cab.

XDA devs have almost broken HSPL so you'll be able to flash custom ROMs before long (and WM 6.5 too no doubt) as they're just testing it before general release. Until then stick with the current ROM

One downside - the radio stack is weak on this phone and so reception can be poor. HTC have a long history of fixing this in ROM updates though so it's no biggy long term.

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

I did notice the other night that Bluetooth audio is very poor. Lots of static and pretty much unusable for music. Hopefully this will be corrected with a new ROM.

I'm not nearly as tempted to try a new ROM as I was with the TyTN II, mainly because it is so damned good as it is. The Original 6.0 ROM from T-Mobile for the Vario III was a bit pants, especially compaired to Manila 2D.

Thanks for the AIT link, does that make much difference in the real world? lights.exe might be faster, but what about the standard phone stuff? I don't ever use it for games, and didn't use my last one for video (might with this though)

Depends on the app - anything that uses 3D will benefit yeah - but there's no downside to having it installed either (i.e. nothing get's slower, nothing breaks). SPB's carousel mode is ultra smooth for me now though, and I guess sat-nav apps might well benefit too (i use iGo 8).

I'd like 6.5 back (i had it on the old phone) so I will upgrade when it's available and I'll probably try some custom ROMs simply because they have more stuff baked into the ROM from the get-go which means more RAM free etc.

Definitely prefer the Diamond to the Pro.

    Re: HTC Touch Diamond 2

The on screen keyboard of the Diamond 2 works well, and in fact the on screen keypad from the Polaris I was using on my TyTN II was also good. But the touch screen of the Diamond 2 is responsive enough that it makes a hell of a difference.

The shear weight and bulk created by the slide out keyboard far outweighs any down side of a touch screen keyboard.

Oh, and the Diamond 2 has haptic feedback, so you get a little pulse from the vibration motor when you touch keys.

They've all been doing that for ages!

Takes a bit of getting used to at first it just pissed me off.
