Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

Maybe although isnt edge only available in certain areas? hehe

I know that without the APN settings I couldnt send/receive MMS messages but I always have mobile roaming turned on and allow 3g stuff as I have a data bundle.

Might be an idea to turn it on for a second and see if the texts come down. Failing that Give orange a call They where pretty helpful when I last called them even if the call centre was offshore(Rang a different number to the usual premiere service one.)

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

    Hi all

I'm going to place an order with T-mobile tomorrow and get a new G2 on Tuesday. What are the very first things I should do with it?

Should I use it out of the box or charge it first, and if charge it should I run it overnight? I know batteries have improved since the old days but I've read mixed reports of the best way to get a battery off to a good start.

Will a new G2 on T-mobile (UK) need flashing with the latest firmware? How can I tell what's installed? I know it won't be Android 1.6 or 2.0 yet but I do want it to have that firmware release which deals with the lag and so on.

I gather one of the first things when it's on is to give it Gmail account details and so on because it's difficult to add them later. My Gmail Contacts haven't been sorted and tidied yet, there are hundreds of email addresses I've only emailed once. Will the whole contacts book get downloaded to the phone, so should I sort it out first?

    Anything else?

Cheers all, very excited with a hint of trepidation as to using a solely touch-screen device...

    DM

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

You see, here's the concern I've always had with syncing -

Say I sync with Gmail and all the contacts come down. Then at some point I update the firmware which wipes the phone. The way I see it, the next time I start again and sync, Gmail may well go "all the contacts have gone, he's deleted them" and delete them too.

I guess the best thing is to flash it before doing anything...

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

Nope GMail wont delete all your contacts.

i`ve wiped the phone a couple of times and its never wiped all the contacts.

It only deletes contacts if you physically delete them from the phone/online. THink it syncs with the server when it deletes them so if your phone syncs with no contacts at all it assumes that its a fresh install

All my contacts are in gmail now. And all my texts

ITs scary how dependant I now am on google

    All your texts too? Clever...

I figure I can always export my Gmail contacts too, then if something does go wrong I can put them all back, but cheers for sharing your experience Kopite, that's encouraging!

Presume everyone knows now that it's actually looking like 2.1 is coming to Hero - we get to skip 2.0

Sadly, still no information about when. Some think end Jan 2010 , while some say Q2 2010

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

HTC are having a important press release at Mobile Congress on Feb 16th where they are expected to officially announce a few new handsets such as the WiMax enabled "Supersonic" but they have also mentioned "New Innovations" that will be launched, which I can only hope means the update to Android 2.1 for us Hero owners..... Ties in with the "mid feb" rumours and speculation that has been rife recently.

    Have a read here:

    and here:

Excellent news, can't wait to get my hero running on 2.1. Hopefully it all happens 'mid feb', been waiting on getting 2.0 for quite a while, will be nice to finally see something.

Re: HTC HERO Arrived today :D

i`ve used a few 2.1 firmwares and they do seem really nice.

I`ve gone back to modaco`s firmware though version 3.1 atm Paul is saying he`ll be doing a 2.1 firmware so that should be cool
