IP camera, iPhone, watching the kids...

Hey all, could i check out the following please on behalf of a friend of mine -
He wants to watch his son at home, with the nanny, whilst he's at work. Our work PCs have the usual ip filtering / blocking software/routers, and so there are many sites we can't access.

He wants therefore to buy himself an iphone (more portable than a netbook and 3g card) and buy an ip camera, such as this Edimax, or possibly its bigger brother with the tilt / left & right motors etc.

Does anyone do this? Is it as easy as it looks? Do edimax give you a static IP address to host a site on, or does it jsut use your home router?

I thought the Edimax ones used flash or Java? So that would be no.

If its flash it *might* work on a up to date windows mobile phone, but probably it wouldn't.

The first question is do you get a full HSDPA signal at his desk? If yes then you could look at a netbook type thing, but either way its going to get expensive!

I think that because he cycles to work he really wants something no larger than an iphone or similar. The iphone by the way hasnt been bought yet, but I think he's very sold on the idea and may buy impulsively an day!
Hmm.. i hadn't considered that the iphone might not be able to view the images

Any other suggestions? Perhaps a different IP camera? Or is an iphone really not a good idea?

There's cam apps on the app store just for this sort of thing

I think he's just making excuses to buy an iPhone! Surely he could at least try using a standard web or IP cam and use hosting software to view the cam via a web browser at work?

Of course, if he then finds that his access is restricted, then go for an iphone.

Anyone know a reasonably priced IP camera that'll work with Linux, i.e. doesn't require IE to view.

Even if it does "require" IE to view, quite often you can just pretend to be IE by switching your browser's user agent string i.e. what browser your browser is admitting to being. There are firefox/seamonkey plugins: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

Of course, this doesn't work if the site really does require some Microsoft-only technology.
