iphone, android or windows mob?
My phone contract with t-mobile is up next month(currently have a kaiser).
Looking at the above 3 operating systems, I'm having a hard time deciding which to go for(and therafter, which phone to go for).
I like the apps store on the iphone, android is open source so has promise in the future and it's own apps store is expanding.
I've used windows mobile for the past 18 months quite happily. I like the ability to change any part of the o/s that you don't like(keyboard, radio, etc) and windows mobile 6.5(and prob windows mob 7 next year). I don't find windows mobile slow at all as I've always used custom roms. the windows apps store is due out with windows mobile 6.5.
I feel a horrible sense of betrayl over common sense for considering an iphone as I generally don't like any apple products(I've always thought of them as style over substance) but the 3.0 o/s seems finally to have produced a useable phone.
I use the internet a lot on my phone so want the o/s to be able to play any media I want to and for the internet to be useable on any website(near enough).
The iphone is not a bad looking phone and easy to use, the android ones are getting better and so are the HTC windows mob ones(especially with hardware keyboards).
Any comments, particularly from people who use the above 3 operating systems and know what it's like living day to day with them.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
It's really a personal thing tbh. I have used the iphone interface and I don't really like it... plus I don't like the low res screen and the loss of some functionality when coming from WM. Android looks good to me as you mentioned has the most potential. I would like to see a high res screen on an Android phone before I consider it though.
Web browsing at crap resolutions is not an acceptable sacrifice to move from WM at the moment IMO.
(I am a Touch HD user and WM user since the 2005)
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
Try all three on your local high street.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
I've had a Windows Mobile device (HTC TYTNII) for a while now and can honestly say that I'll not be getting another when my contract runs out.
The whole thing is too clunky and you have to modify it too much to make it useable. Yes, I know it's nice that you CAN modify it but tbh I'd rather have got something that was nice to use in the first place. Also, because of the wide variations in hardware specs between the various phone the software available is limited and not always completely compatible between os versions.
As for Android. It definitely looks like it has potential but as far as I can see it isn't there yet and I'd much rather not be an unofficial beta tester with a device I use so much.
I looked at the earlier iPhones and came to the conclusion that they were very pretty but didn't give me anything that would make me pay the extra for them. With the latest version that has changed. I went and had a look at one in the shop and was very impressed with what I saw. Everything seems to be very intuitive to use and they seem to have put a lot of thought into making it easy to access everything.
One good example is the way that the touch screen reacts when you're making a call. On my TytnII I find that (don't laugh) the buttons on the screen react to my ear. Stupid I know, but I find it cuts me off, it starts applications and sometimes even starts up the communications manager and shuts down the phone connection. OK, I can set it to turn off the screen when I make a call but that deprives me of the use of the phones functios. If I want to check on a number from my contacts I have to bring the screen back to life by changing the volume. It's just clunky.
The iPhone however has some kind of proximity sensor thingamajiggy which turns the screen off when you put the phone to your ear and then as soon as you take it away it switches it back on again.
The iPhone apps I've seen look really good and there seems to be something that will do pretty much anything you want.
I've never been a fanboy for any software or device. I like the thing that does the job I want it to do best. I've always had PCs rather than Macs because they do what I want (games) and I have an iPod because I like the interface.
That's why when my contract comes up for renewal I'll be drop kicking this clunky piece of **** into the middle of next week and getting an iPhone.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
iPhone, but only now it has copy&paste and search.
Web browsing is better on the iphone than the others,
and of course lots of great games & stuff on appstore (amongst the crap).
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
You should be considering the Palm Pre if they can improve the battery life.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is pretty good, they should be releasing something very soon.
If you want an andriod phone, take a look at the Xperia X3 coming out soon.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
I`ve been loving my android phone. Had it about a month now and its brilliant.
I find it a lot better than the iphone and a lot more flexible. There arent the huge amount of apps there are for the iphone but I have found apps for everything I want to be able to do so far.

This is probably true. However, the Touch Diamond 2 was pretty much perfect for me straight out of the box. I've not had to modify it at all, just change a few settings. I think I've only installed a couple of bits of software, but can't really remember what.
As I got mine off contract, I'll be getting a free upgrade to 6.5 from HTC apparently. Looking forward to that and Microsofts App store.

Same as I have found with the diamond 2, just added sat nave etc to my one, no point in flashing at the moment, pondering the official 6.5 upgrade when it comes out and the new version of manilla. Best phone I've ever used, and a relatively cheap on contract. Have looked around the roms on xda and they are either 6.5 based, or slightly ttweaked original roms, rather than total reworks.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
I've had a look on XDA-Devsa couple of times, and haven't seen anything I like the look of. Nothing looks as polished as the official HTC build. I think I will grab the updated one posted a month or so agon on HTC.com, but thats for the SIM only handset as opposed to a network operators one.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
TouchHD here, love Wm6.5 with TouchFlo3d.

In what way is it better? The crap resolution? The lack of flash support? Java?

Took the words right out of my mouth.
WinMo + Opera + High Res Phone = The Win.
Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
Yeh it seems there are a lot of iphone users who haven't seen anything better!

Re: iphone, android or windows mob?
The thing is the Apple Kool Aid that is the iPhone is an odd thing, what it does, it does quite well, but the presentation is immaculate.
I've taken a girl before now to a restraunt I'd not been before, i thought the food was distinctly average, unlike the bill, and well i generally like to eat out once a week or so, its fair to say i spent a large amount of my income on it. She thought it was great, it was presented very well and that was her first impression made, it could do no wrong, compared with most low end restraunts it looks much better. Now for taste, having never had those dishes, or realising quite how veal should be cooked (in my mind) she couldn't possibly tell.
Now because I have a friend who is more stupid when it comes to love than I (and thats going some) who is also equally intelegent and gets a fair whack for it, I've spent a lot of time eating out new and intresting food as well as the old favourates, I've ground accustomed to how I believe it should be.
My other friend hasn't, and was just wow'd by seeing these bits in the first place.
The thing is, its a lot of effort to get the exposure to the proper food, bookings often have to be made a long time in advance.
Having something that is just immaculately presented, will win over the people who've never experianced. The downside is those people will then look down on the real "street" food when it starts to emerge, even thou it actually tastes a lot better than the junk they're eating, whilst costing less.
