Pay close attention to the PDF slides for technical detail, especially the bits regarding Android's libc Bionic.

Also fish around for the benchmarks showing apps written on Mono as 5x faster than those written for the Dalvik VM - and apps in C++ or C as even faster
Thanks for that, very interesting. Looking at the N900 but was also considering Android. Shades of the old WinCE where they chucked out odd bits of the standard C library as an "optimisation" so you ended up reimplementing the calls all over the place.

Symbian isn't a smartphone OS, Symbian is an accident of history

There's a reason Nokia announced they won't use it for N-series anymore

After having an N810 for a couple of years I'm looking at Android devices rather than the N900; Maemo's interesting n' all, especially if you like poking around in the guts of Linux, but the devices are out there in such small numbers that it doesn't have much of an ecosystem in the way of applications.

I think you could well be right

Android sucks hardest out of the Linux-based Smartphone OSen - but I think it's the only one with a very bright future ahead, purely due to ecosystems

Really?! Thank god cause I really didn't like the OS on the e71. The calendar was the best part of it, I really liked how clear it was. I hate how the calendar works on the Bold 9000. Maybe I'm just picky?

Do you know if they'll change the OS for E series?

Re: Another October phone - Nokia N900

had a play around with this at the nokia store in regent street. i can say that this is almost certainly the next phone i'm getting, i'm due an upgrade and have been told that the phone companies should be offering the n900 around january....

the flash player was feature i was most keen on trying out, and good thing is it works! can't comment too much on speed as i was streaming a live feed from parliment but it definitely works. very impressed with the mutli tasking and media playing functions. no drm like apple! god how i hate itunes....

anyone out there who already has this phone and like to share their expereinces thus far????

Re: Another October phone - Nokia N900

Guys this really ISN'T a phone. Its firstly an Internet Tablet with phone capabilities. Thats what its being marketed as.

Battery life is rubbish, and it doesn't even do MMS. Thie N900 has had some good reviews and write ups, but with Nokia launching Maemo 6 next year, I think its best to hold off.

Having an N97 its better with v20 software, but still buggy. There isn't a perfect 'smartphone' out there at the moment. The HTC Hero is swish but lacks in build quality IMO. Google is up and coming with Android, but needs to mature.

I agree Symbian needs to go and give way to something else.

ive got an n900 and it is really good but the battery is rubbish! much worse than i thought it was going to be. its far from perfect but even though its in its infancy it still has loads of apps and fantastic features. its only going to get better even has mame an x86 emulator and scummvm its great!!

its brilliant. ive recently got it to display track tags / caller details on the stereo using the built in transmitter and rds (i like to call it poor mans bluetooth stereo lol) to name one of the many things this phone can do

cant help but feel left out when a big mobile app launches on all the main platforms and it isnt ported to maemo though
