Here is what I did;
Go into town, with a lot of time spare (few hours minimum).
Find a shop that will let you use a live one (very kind girl in an orange shop let me play on the android for a good 40 minutes).
Most o2 shops have live iphones out on display.
Use them, find out which one YOU prefer. Then haggle the price down
Felt a bit sad that ended up going for a HTC Hero on orange, but the girl in the orange shop didn't get my commission, they just couldn't compete with CPW on price in the end, which was a shame as they were very helpful.
Oh and ....

The HD2 uses a skin of Sense UI and that is much better than the iphone imo. Apps & games I can't comment as it's win mo and I dont know or use it having been put off it long ago.
Hopefully not coming across as a fandroid but this makes interesting reading for the uniniated.
Ten reasons Android handsets beat the iPhone

Touchflo, sense, spb mobile shell, home - just a selection of UIs you can use outside of the MS defaults (titanium / old skool ms shell). As for apps and games - you do know how long WM has been around, right? People act like the iPhone introduced third party apps when all it did was provide a single store for them - there's stacks for WM and without the questionable regulation to boot..
Currently running a touch diamond 2 with Sense and WM 6.5.1 (otherwise known as second edition) thanks to the thriving community that exists for WM and the custom ROMs they produce..
Got a lot of time for the iPhone and it's very positive influence on the industry but i'm well aware of it's shortcomings too, as I am for WM too - I stick with the latter as some of the apps i want don't exist on the iphone, I prefer the flexibility of the platform and the phone's quite a bit smaller too
Nowt wrong with the UI as far as I've been using it.
As for apps, its got office mobile on it so I can do word/excel type stuff, MSN messenger, skype, google maps with latitude, remote desktop, it ties in with exchange servers so you get all your work emails, it also ties in with your hotmail account and has "My Phone" from MS on it so you can sync your phone/contacts/data and use it to find your phone if you loose it, also if its stolen you can remotely erase your data.
If you want more of a "toy" then by all means go get an iPhone, I'm sure your friends will be impressed, if you want an actual work tool then get something else because IMHO the iPhone is a toy, not a tool, can you change the battery for a higher rated one, infact can you change the battery at all, do you want it to burst into flames, theres an app for that, all of the apps I've listed above are free and give me everything I need.
Games, well I dont play games but there are some out there, infact a quick look on a WM software site there are 14574 titles listed under games..

^ Posts like this help me make my mind up as to why i'd never want an iPhone or other Apple products myself.

:: of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the most ::
whats happens when you have to use the unskinned parts, the parts that are designed for a stylus, ones that didnt look like they have changed since my Imate-Kjam, start button!!
Very true, apple just did it much better than anyone else, they are far ahead WM/Symbian now. Main reason I didnt get a palm pre was nothing much had been developed for it, hopefully they will catchup, android definately will.
Nothing wrong with it just iphone/palm pre and maybe android are better
iphone will do all of the above (not all for free), doesnt do remote wipe though i think but will also do loads of other useful stuff. personally I find blackberries are the best business phones.
I found Bejewelled 2 the best game on WM, not a great deal otherwise. iphone is a pretty good gaming platform, enjoying tiger woods atm, there is a reason Sony/Nintendo are worried.
at the end of the day both phones win on some points, iphone definately on UI/Apps/Games though
In answer to the question - is it worth the fuss? Yes.
I use a factory unlocked iPhone 3GS, and I also use an HTC Hero alongside it (long term test through work) and I also use WinMo (also work).
If you have a 3GS to compare other devices against then they are all laggy and slow. Even the the ROM update the Hero lags. I've had the G2 Touch variant and I now use the white SIM free version.....no matter what people say, they do lag, and I wanted a fast phone without any slow down. The 3GS is it.
