No, not tried the HD2 yet. Whilst I used to be a fan of WinMo, I really don't rate the OS any more.

As far as price goes, yes the iPhone is a more expensive offering, mine cost nigh on £600 with VAT and fees after importing it and the Hero at the time was £400 sim free, so not quite double, but certainly a higher price point. Of course, going by price alone, does that mean that you would expect something like the Nokia 8800 Gold Arte to be faster still? After all it's nearly £1300.....

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

The big put-off for me was Apple's insistence on contract tie-ins (at a premium) which didn't interest me. Since they've had to offer then sim free but they're still very high cost (of course the HD2 ain't cheap but it will go down rapidly like or 'normal' phones).

Just nabbed another TD2 for the missus (for xmas) at about half the cost of the iphone, no contract either..

I agree that on paper the Milestone looks great - hopefully the user experience will follow suit and not be like every other Motorola ever made.

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

NB/ I've got an 8GB iPhone 3G, best phone I've ever owned in some areas, worst in others.

    - They're overpriced, then again so is the HD2 so meh
    - Battery life is awful
    - Camera is awful
    - You will get bored with most of the games you buy within a week & never touch them again
    - You need to jailbreak to have any decent tools that most WM have out of the box.
    - Everyone & their brother has one.
    - iTunes can be a pain
    - Fixed battery, no hard resets if it goes tits-up (but mine never has unless it was my fault in the first place)

+ They look good & feel nice to hold.
+ iTunes surely has the largest collection of music/videos/podcasts etc in existence
+ They're very easy to use, no drilling down 10 menus to get what you want.
+ No hidden ugly menu when the skinning runs out like touchflo
+ Apps, I'll say it again, Apps. Some are amazingly useful & can be very cheap. In my time of owning WM devices nothing touched the kind of apps I see on the iPhone (NB/ I have not used WM in 1year so things may be changing)
+ Games, amongst the crap there are some gems out there (Assassins Creed, Ragdoll Blaster, Hero of sparta) & it does get a lot of attention from devs so it'll only get better.
+ Extra posibilities with jailbreaking. Most should be standard with the phone anyway (SBSettings, cycorder for example) but there are thousands out there which can change every tiny detail on your phone.
+ They do seem to hold their 2nd hand value well for resale.

As many have said, just go play with on in an O2 store. If it's not too much over the cost of another handset you're considering then go for it. Be aware there will probably be a new one out in 6months but that's always the case with phones so choose your purchase time carefully!

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

Problem is batteries and big screens - the former is that energy density isn't high enough and the latter being need big screen for fat fingers innit. The iPhone's sin of a non-swappable battery is horrible though - I have a desktop charger for my TD2 which also charges a spare battery - pretty handy on a long trip (although battery life is very good it's not infinite) and swapping the battery is a 10 second job at most.

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

The only solution to extra power was an external battery for the 3GS if I'm not near a power socket.

I have often wondered about going back to a "normal" phone again but then you find an excellent app and you think twice.

It's nice the first time you use it although the novelty does wear off a little.

But an enjoyable device to use nonetheless.

Im gunna say it again, ANDROID ANDROID ANDROID!

join the forces and get a HTC Hero if you like Touchscreen, or wait for the Motorola Milestone (Droid), as this looks great, has Android 2.0, 1ghz snapdragon processor and a hardware keyboard.

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

I use a Hero as well as the 3GS (evaluating through work) and it's really not god to use if you compare with the iPhone. It's laggy no matter what people say. The new snapdragon cpu's may help, but for the time being for my personal phone I'd stay away from android.

    YMMV

Strange that as the Hero I'm currerntly using (not my Magic with Hero rom) is not laggy at all.

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

I thi k the question of lag also depends on if you have something else to driectly compare against. As I use the hero with the iPhone side by side every day, it's perhaps more obvious to me. I was going to reply to this thread using the hero but it's just too much of a painful experience!

Had I not owned an iPod touch at the time of getting my original hero (G2) then I'd probably have been quite happy with it, as many people at work are with theirs.

    Re: Iphone, worth the fuss?

I had a good play with the 3GS today at the apple store, and I have to say it does many things right as a phone (despite my very low opinion of anything made by Apple). The UI is simply BRILLIANT and responsive. Phone specific features like the address book is very well thought out, its so easy to navigate your contacts.

But would I buy it? No and heres why

    1. Itunes - Nope, not gonna install a slow and buggy (on windows) piece of software to administer my phone. Whats wrong with good ol USB storage support?

    2. Non removable battery + poor battery life - The battery lasts a day and you're restricted from using spare batteries? Which genius Apple engineer came up with that?? Then again I'm really spoiled by my k750's battery life, even my current symbian phone lasts 3-4 days on a single charge unless I go frenzy with web browsing.

    3. Home screen - Yes I want one, or at least something customizable so I can view my calendar and notes in the same screen.

    4. Multitasking - I've heard that the iphone is capable of a some multitasking but that one single button did seem very limiting when I was playing with it. E.g can you edit your contacts/notes/calender while surfing the net?

    5. Small issues like no bluetooth file transfers (so I've heard) and no radio.

Its quite a shame because a lot of Iphone's disadvantages can probably be easily fixed, but not implemented for some reason. The nokia E72 imo has the best hardware out there, apart from the very poor Symbian UI which requires you to navigate 500000 menus to do the simplest tasks. Hopefully HTC will save us all with a HTC HD2 bundled with android 2.1
