    T-Mobile Pulse

Ordered a T-Mobile Pulse when they had their big PAYG sale last week, and it's just turned up; few quick first impressions...

    • Nice unit, good screen; sometimes needs quite firm prodding to pick up presses, possibly because it comes with some sort of screen protector that I've left on, people are reporting it's more responsive without
    • I'm finding the on-screen keyboard really easy to use, even in portrait mode. Turned off the predictive text as it slowed things down a bit, even my chunky fingers mostly hit the right key
    • GPS locked on fast, maybe 20-30 seconds
    • ShopSavvy is a really nifty application (point the camera at a barcode, it looks up the cheapest prices both online and locally based on GPS), although...
    • The barcode scanner is a bit frinky, and starts up completely black. You can coax it into life by pointing a really bright light source at the camera, but it's a bit of a pain; some posts at MoDaCo suggest there's a replacement file that can fix it, but I haven't started delving into the innards of the filesystem
    • All in all, well chuffed for under £100!

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

Got mine yesterday. My first smartphone, moving on from a SE W810i. Very happy with it so far but as it's my first smartphone I may be looking at it with rose tinted specs! Most of the stuff below is my niggles with it but that's only cos those are the things you remember most!

Keyboard is ok, though funnily enough it took a while to get used to using a QWERTY keyboard on a phone and I kept moving my finger/thumb about like it was still a numeric keypad. Agree that it's better with T9 off.

WiFi and 3G both work well. Couldn't test the 3G properly til today as the £10 credit only went on this afternoon. Amazed how many WiFi APs I discovered while walking the dog last night!

Some cool apps, especially WiFinder, Seesmic (Twitter), Dolphin browser, Google Sky Map, beebPlayer. Seemed to slow up a bit after installing/unistalling some apps but rebooting sorted that.

Didn't realise there was a rocker switch either side of the trackball which caused some probs when I was trying to do the set up and couldn't shift the onscreen keyboard!

Battery drains quickly (Less than a day on first charge) though it should last a fair bit longer once the initial buzz and constant trying things out eases off.

Not overly keen on the positioning of the usb slot and headphone socket at the top and the sockets have the kind of covers that feel like they'll come off pretty soon. Also does the annoying thing of making the hardware detection in Windows go mad when you plug it in asking for drivers. Why they can't just make these things appear as USB drives only is beyond me!

No flash/light on camera (should've had an LED light at least!)

Overall though, very impressed. Just a few niggles that I can live with and some that may get ironed out when the OS is upgraded.

Oh, and the video playback on it was great - beebPlayer worked well for iplayer stuff and ran a vid through handbrake using the ipod touch settings and that played fine.

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

Ooh, Wikitude is nifty! Though being slightly in the sticks, and inside, there's not too much within a couple of miles, and it's all projected on the living room walls at the moment...

Yeah, hard to gauge battery life while fiddling constantly, doesn't seem brilliant, but not too bad. And the socket covers do seem a bit daft & flimsy. Only app I'm missing from my Nokia N810 is AisleRiot solitaire, found one for Android that does Freecell, Spider and a couple of others, but AisleRiot had hundreds of variants!

do like jaffo says and get google sky map, i guess living in the middle of nowhere without streetlights etc and being able to see the actual stars would add a hell of a lot to that app

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

If you like Wikitude, try Layar, a good alternative with extra options.

Also some other apps / games I would look at that are ALL free, not like the paid for crap on other popular handsets!...

ScummVM - One of my favourite apps, lets you play old point & click classics like Monkey Island / Full Throttle etc, just need the original game files.

Dolphin Browser - A good alternative to the inclusive Android browser that has tabbed browsing and some other nice features. Think Firefox, but mobile. Will certainly tide over until Android versions of Opera / Firefox arrives.

Abduction - A cute little game that keeps the girlfriend entertained and makes good, simple use of the tilt sensor.

Flying Aces Lite - A clone of the popular "land the planes at the airport" game that is very addictive and enjoyable.

Facebook - The original app is still the best IMHO, the widget is a little useless but pop a shortcut to the app on your homescreen and get 'bookin.

Gaming/Mobile/Tech/News Buzz - Great widgets for keeping you updated with the latest news / reviews whatever you are into. I check these a few times every day and it has replaced checking some websites that I used to on a daily basis.

Google Sky Map - You will probably rarely use it but its a great example of augmented reality and a good one to show off to the friends, especially on a clear winter's night.

GPS Speedo - I've had mixed luck with getting this app to work on my Hero, but essentially is a Speedometer which is quite fun and good and checking accuracy of inbuilt speedometers, especially on older cars.

Hyperspace Lite - Good Android game that takes leaves out of Monkey Ball and Mercury's book.

iMusic - Stream or Download any song you can find on their database - legality of this app is still debated, but give it a go all the same.

iMeem - A pretty good music streaming app, requires you to sign up but I have used it on various occasions very happily. Also includes useful info on artists and search for an artist and it will suggest other similar things to listen to.

Light Racer 3D Basic - Think TRON, quite fun!

Note Everything - Good notepad app, also lets you do sketches etc...

Shazam - You gotta know what this does, but if not essentially it will recognise any track if you hold it up to a speaker or are in a club and don't know what you're listening to.

Snesoid - Amongst other emulators on the market this is my favourite, letting you play old sNes classics if you have the ROM, (if of course you own the original cartridge! )

Solitaire - A good time killer and faithful clone of the Windows classic Solitaire format.

Speed Forge 3D Demo - One of the best examples of a proper 3D android game. Think Wipeout, just not as fast...

Taskiller - Great for keeping your handset running quick if like me you have a tendency of not properly exiting apps and leaving too much running in the background.

Torrect Lite - One of the best and trickiest handheld puzzlers I've played, has kept me amused for hours trying to work it out!

Voice Search - A must to keep those iPhone fanboys at bay, the name says it all.

WordUp - One of the best word-based puzzle games on the market and another great time killer with randomly generated word boards.

Have fun with Android, I know I have!

    Ben

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

Well just been playing around with mine and very impressed, input / response is a bit laggy at times but its not to bad! For the price I paid its well worth the money! For something that costs a little more then a Samsung Genio Touch I'd say personally this is the better phone. I'm semi missing my keyboard that i've grown used to on my HTC TyTT II but I think i'll get over it. Other than that nothing really further to add to what the other posters have said

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

Just one obvious thing, but still possibly worth mentioning.

Using all these 'wonderful' apps will absolutely hammer your balance on PAYG unless you have an internet option (such as the £10/month unlimited texts & internet or the £20 for 6 months internet only deal)

I looked at the Pulse before getting the G2 Hero on contract (got a good deal with customer services despite being a new customer, so I guess calling at the end of the month paid off).

As for apps, I would chip in with Palringo for instant messaging/chat on multiple platforms, give a +1 for Google Sky Map, and mention the Street View in Google Maps.

I can't remember if it works on the Pulse, but on the Hero (similar Android phone), you access it by putting in an address into Google Maps or tapping the screen to get an address. Then pressing the little bubble that appears and choosing Street View (if available).
Once into it, press Menu (hard-key) and turn on compass (if that's an option. Can't honestly remember if the pulse has the compass ), but if it does, it really is amazing.

Haven't tried wiktitude, so off to give it a go.

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

Found a handy little utility called "Toggle Settings"; does what it says on the tin, gives a quick panel of shortcuts for turning on/off WiFi, 3G, GPS, screen brightness etc etc (some of them can't be controlled via an application in Cupcake, but it takes you straight to the right bit of the Settings screen). Turning off WiFi and 3G overnight really saves on the power, the battery only drops a couple of percent instead of 50%-odd.

Looks like the pulse has been discontinued:

    http://android.modaco.com/content/t-...-no-more-payg/

I guess I'm lucky in that I managed to get one about a week ago but this probably means no (official) software updates from now on.

stop worrying right now you are in the same boat as people with the Hero, and both are expecting an update from 1.5 -> 2.X i wouldn't be surprised if they came out within a week of each other

    Re: T-Mobile Pulse

I've had this phone a few months now - great phone overall.

My only gripe is that if the screen has turned off you have no way of knowing if you've missed a call or if there's any messages. The Touch Diamond used to flash the LED for the scrool wheel to draw your attention to the fact one of these events had occured, whereas the Pulse seemingly doesn't do anything. Are there any settings to change this? Gets a pain having to manually check every so often.
