    Nokia N900

Got one of these last week - absolutely loving it so far!

Multi-tasking, great high resolution touchscreen, excellent keyboard, very fast and responsive, awesome opensource apps, full mozilla-based web browser with flash support

Does anybody else have one yet?

    @sp3n

I take it that is on Vodafone? 24 months sounds a bit extreme, but looks quite usual at the moment.

Still looking to replace my N95, and fancied one of these.
I'm on t-Mobile at the mo.

How are you finding the speed of the 3g?
The internet on Voda seems to be limited to max 500Mb.
Streaming video will surely hit this limit quite quickly?

Also how is the battery life after a day of heavy use?

ive got one and when the signal is good the 3g is pretty fast, downloads are nice and quick 500mb is standard on all networks unless you have an iphone (o2 is only 200mb!)

battery life, piss poor, like most smartphones, heavy use, all day = dead phone.

the phone does have some great features and there are so many great add ons to install out there but personally as much as i do like it, i regret getting it. it just doesnt do everything i want it to do as practically as i'd like and as so much is still in beta / testing, a lot of the great app's are bug riddled / unstable and can really impact performance on the phone having them installed. for example the other day, the alarm went off at 5am (which is the time im up for work ) but it locked up and i couldnt shut the thing up, my missus (who was next to me) went mad!

thinking i should of gone for an iphone or hd2. there again the grass isnt always greener i suppose and the fm transmitter / tv out is brilliant.

    @JimmyBoy

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm no longer in a rush to upgrade now!
Perhaps I should be waiting for the Maemo 6 perhaps?!

As with the N95 I have, I guess Nokia will eventually update the firmware and improve battery life etc?

    Re: Nokia N900

Got mine last Saturday. Spent most of the weekend playing and learning and this week has been the acid test. It's doing a very good job so far

E.g. battery life - having been through a few full charge cycles now, I'm finding it pretty good. I have the wifi on all day, Gmail (over IMAP) syncing every 5 minutes, calendar setup on Exchange, MSN, some casual web browsing and listening to music in the car on the way in and out. I took it off charge at about 8am today and now after almost 10 hours of the above, I have half my battery left. So that's pretty good in my book.

The keyboard is great and I've not had any trouble with the space bar off to the right. The major firmware update significantly improved the screen response so that was good. I'm really finding it a joy to use and it fits what I need very well. I nearly bought a netbook recently but now the N900 does everything I would have done on a netbook

There are some quirks occasionally but no phone is free from that. Take it for what it is and accept you'll need to get your hands dirty to get the best from it. It's a phone for geeks, without a doubt.

    Ahhh....I want one again!!!
    Stop tempting me!

Good to hear some real world testing.
I too have been thinking a netbook would be handy, so as you say this could be a much better option.

Hopefully most bugs/features will have been ironed out come April when my contract finishes.

    Re: Nokia N900

I too am looking to get one of these beauties as well, I recently got a Blackberry Bold 9700 which turned out to bea big fat mistake, which was a shame really as it really is a quality phone but it just treats you like scum if you aren't a business man or a banker, lol.

So its currently on Ebay, I'm hopeful that it'll sell at a high enough price that I won't need to spend any of my actual money on the Nokia N900, plus I've seen a port of Duke Nukem 3D, on it too!

I'm obviously not enough of geek then as I had the chance to play with one for a week or two and put it back in it's box after a couple hours. I ran back to my android phones crying & begging forgiveness for my adultorous ways.

I just couldn't get on with unintuative o/s, the lack of portrait mode except when making a call, the fact that you can't specify multiple apn's and unlike everyone else here it seems the slowness of the phone. (and yes I had applied all available updates).

The funny thing is the original owner didn't want to take it back and it's now been passed round more than a few people in my department (R&D) and all have had a similar experience to me.

I guess I'm too used to simple, easy to use o/s's and don't have the patience these days to explore a device if it's not intuative from the outset.

It's funny, but the reason I didn't choose this over a HD2 was because of all the horrible user experiences I've had with Nokia's symbian OS - regardless of whether this is a new OS or not, I just didn't trust Nokia to put a comprehensive Smart Phone OS together with good functionality.

Now I've got my HD2 and I'm loving it...

    Re: Nokia N900

    Horses for corses Jim

The N900 is my first smartphone since my old SE P800, way back when. For the last year and a half I've been using an N78 which has been superb and I've found S60 to be pretty good. There are some similarities between Maemo and S60 but IMHO they are mainly limited to the colour scheme. There are lots of nice touches with the UI.

I thought using the phone in landscape would be my biggest issue but it now seems more odd to use a phone in portrait for things like email and browsing.

The APN thing, there are solutions to that - as I said, you need to get your hands dirty to make the most of it

It works for me, that's all I can say. I spent months trying different phones and making my mind up. I think a lot of N900 users (particularly ones that comment in the Maemo community) bought one for the novelty and would be better off with other devices.

Bottom line, for the kind of people that read Hexus I think the N900 makes an excellent mobile device

    Re: Nokia N900

definatly agree with the hands dirty comment

once you add some extra repositories for the app manager there really is a stupid amount of things you can do with the phone,

like adding extra apn's lol (i needed to add a new apn in order to get mms working) but thats a feature i would of thought should be built into the phone.

and yess duke 3d works like a dream on the phone, as does quake 3 and doom, there are even n64 and psx emulators being worked on.

my next mission is to get my ps3 six axis working with the phone for gaming over tv out goodness, it makes the phone more of a games console that way lol. curiously the n900 can be easily used as a ps3 pad lol.
