02 iPhone on different provider
I bought an iPhone 18 months ago on 02 and found that the signal strength is shocking in most of the places I want to use it, I had a plan to unlock my iPhone and cancel my 02 contract and get a vodafone sim. I found this one which seems to offer what I want and for only £20 per month as opposed to the current £35.
I went into Carphone Warehouse and told them what I wanted to do and they said I couldn't. The sales assistant said that the technology on the iPhone and sim card would mean that several features would not work. She then went on to say that she was not a liberty to tell me which features but that I should just take her word for it, if I wanted to be on Vodafone then I needed to buy a new Vodafone iPhone.
This seems like a load of you know whats to me but none of the other sales assistants batted an eye lid so I thought I would ask for other opinions.
Thanks

Load of bollocks, O2 are unlocking the iPhones that are out of contract now
You will need a plan that includes data though if you dont want to pay an arm and a leg every time it connects to the net
Re: 02 iPhone on different provider
The sales person might be thinking that other network providers have a similar implementation to O2:
If you got an iphone on contract at O2 you would be provided with a sim card which allowed all the features of the iphone to work (visual voice mail, and something else which I can't remember). If you put a non O2 iphone sim card in the iphone it will work but some of the features won't.
I'd ring up which ever network and ask them if all the features will work if they provide you a sim only contract.
See here to unlock your iphone: http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html
Re: 02 iPhone on different provider
Lol the sales assistant is either a liar or doesnt know what they were on about. You can text o2 and they will unlock your iphone for you now.
The only thing im aware of is visual voicemail thats the only feature that vodafone currently dont have and im sure they will implement it soon
Re: 02 iPhone on different provider
Everything will work when you move to another network (apart from visual voicemail which has already been mentioned)
You just need to make sure that you have data included in your price plan, and you need the right settings, which your new network should provide.
