How much did you pay in the end Sleepyhead?

I jsut spotted that Play.com are offering them with a 12th Feb release date for £600!!

    http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4...e/Product.html

Which is about 50% more than I would want to spend on a SIM free handset. I'm hoping the HTC Bravo (the same platform if not exactly the same device) will be a bit more reasonable. Other wise I may have to wait for the touch screen only version of the Motorola Milestone. And it really pains me to buy a Motorola over a HTC.

Total cost, for Phone, UK charger and Shipping via DHL was approximately £364. Still waiting for VAT to come through. Also note, that amount also includes the £9 commision for paying in dollars via my credit card (which i was unaware of). The handset works out at around £326 + vat I think from memory.

Complete total (inclusive of tax) would come in the region of £426 for the phone, shipping and UK charger.

    Edit
Just installed the update: fairly slick process though I have no idea how long my phone was ready to update!

That's not bad! That's about what I would be looking to spend on a new handset, and what I would expect for the Bravo when it comes out. I would really like to have the HTC Sence interface from the start (without having to find it on XDA-Devs and install it).

Oh and you need to think about getting a better credit card! Charing you £9 for paying in USD is outragous

Re: Google Nexus One - My First Smartphone

I was nervous about buying it from the US. I had a vision of being stuck with a massive VAT and Import Tax Bill at the post office in addition to the cost.

    I'd buy for £400 I think.

Is there anyone out there who has a total price for this phone, including all customs and VAT charges? Does the courier charge a fee for dealing with the importing of the phone?

As I've mentioned a few times in the thread, total cost is about £426 (dependent on exchange rate). You might save a few £££ by not opting to get the UK charger.

The shipping is done by DHL and you pay for that upfront. The only extra is the £1 or £2 admin fee for processing your VAT (that you have to pay after taking delivery of the phone).

To be honest, I wasn't aware about the commission and I don't actually mind as this has been a one off purchase.

I was looking at getting the HTC Hero which was ranging in around the £360 mark.

3G speeds are great! In Bournemouth at the moment and the connection is fast and strong. Update added pinch and zoom which has been a novelty. Going to see what is new with Google maps.

Re: Google Nexus One - My First Smartphone

    Just a friendly bump.

Got the VAT invoice in. £60.15 plus DHL admin fee of £1.25.

Also, the network coverage in my area is awful. 2G speeds are not too bad but where I live it is so slow.

Also of note, using GPS and google maps works really well when tracking where I am. Took a wrong turn in Basingstoke and got slightly lost. Pulled over, checked where I was on the phone, drove some more, stopped, checked again. Quick and accurate. I got back on the M3 in no time.

Now I was an idiot because I forgot about the car home app which would have been ALOT better but I didn't expect to get so lost so quickly.

3G is patchy in my friend's new flat BUT the caveat here is his iPhone struggles to get 3G signal there too. Literally step outside the flat and 3G is strong.

Re: Google Nexus One - My First Smartphone

Thanks for posting your experiences with the phone. I have an upgrade due in March, and although my N97 is stableish at the mo, the N1 is a consideration. With me probably going to a SIM only deal, mainly because I do NOT want a 18-24mo contract with any phone.

The handling fee is much better than parcel force- that was £8 for a model aeroplane I bought for my father for much less than you got your phone!

Lovely phone. Thanks for posting. I'd love one, but may have to settle with one of the cheaper android handsets.

Keep the info coming I think it's quite refreshing that Google allow to ship the item worldwide, whereas most other companies are keen to restrict sales to certain markets.

Re: Google Nexus One - My First Smartphone

Parcel force hit me twice with handling fee of £13.50 ona recent item that came in...plus £50 ish of VAT...not a happy bunny here on that account.

Anyhow, grabbed "Google Star Maps" app and it is brilliant...well I think it would be if I could see the night sky! Go away clouds!

Been really using the facebook app alot and the browser; I just recently discoverd how you open and close tabs! Makes mult-page browsing very easy.

The Facebook app HAS fallen down a couple of times and I'm not too sure why..either my connection or something with facebook.

Also, I can't seem to load up "My Maps" onto Google Maps...unless it is different to my current work in progress Google Map (of Tokyo).

Ahh today I have managed to make my phone lag. I had two webpages open, one of which auto-refreshes and I hit the home key, opened up my gallery and it lagged. This could either be due to the SD card or I briefly hit a wall of some sort. Anyhow, my frist real disappointment with the phone itself.

HTC are making their own version of the Nexus One called the Desire... which should be with UK operators in March/April and subsidised in some shape or form like any other phone.

Sorry, should rephrase it.... if anyone is interested in the Nexus One and possibly on a contract then they should consider the HTC Desire (Bravo) which is due out in March/April as indicated in this article:

Some networks haven’t given exact dates yet but what we do know so far is that T-mobile is expected to be the first with an planned release date of March 26th with Network 3 dishing theirs around “spring time” . We can expect to see the HTC Desire with Orange and Vodafone around April & O2 is yet to give an date.....

.......We haven’t had much confirmation of the Pricing yet (except Orange, who will be offering it free) but we’ll keep you posted!
