Got an iPhone 3Gs 32GB for the wife, so what's next ?

I've managed to get hold of a new free iPhone 3Gs 32GB for my wife, who's currently on a crap £14.99 a month O2 contract with Carphone Warehouse that give her bugger all minutes / texts, and I was wondering what are the next few steps I should take to get the best out of it for her ?.

    So far we've done...

Her SIM is in it so she's ok for calls and SMS.

It's been connected to our WiFi so she can happily get things from the app store.

iTunes, an app which for some reason I'm not a fan off (undue paranoia, Bonjour service etc ?) is now on one of our laptop so she can add MP3's.

    ... so what's next ?.

I'll need to get the contract sorted out so she can make the most of it when away from our WiFi. Now O2 directly do a £20 a month contract where one of the free 'bolt ons' is unlimited web (well, at least enough data for her needs), but will this provide a proper data connection (GPRS / EDGE / 3G) for the iPhone or would O2 be aware that it's an iPhone on the contract and somehow alter the service ?.

Also I don't fancy jailbreaking it until the warranty has expired so we'll stick with O2, which I'm happy with anyhow, plus my work BlackBerry is on O2.

    Thanks

This tariff will be fine on an iPhone, many people do it, unlimited web is GPRS/EDGE/3G inclusive.

Jailbreaking is ace, voiding the warranty is a tricky area as if something happened & the phone still worked you could just restore it via itunes to a standard FW so no-one would no, if it was smashed beyond all recognition then your warranty is void anyway & if you had insurance they'd never be able to tell it was jailbroken from looking at the smashed bits!

Sign up to the SIM only deal via Quidco & possibly get £23 cashback (dependant on a 1yr SIM only deal)

    or

Sign up to O2 on a 1month deal, then ring O2 & ask to switch to the 'Iphone Sim only' tarrif which is exactly the same mins/text + visual voicemail + free Wifi bolt-on.

    or

    give it to me..

    I'd suggest the latter option

And if you want it you'll have a fight on your hands as my 4 1/2 year old son now has another device to play 'Airport Mania: First Flight' on as well as a laptop

You HAVE to get 'Talking Carl' if you have a little one, best child-keeping-busy device known to man!

The next thing is to get used to "her indoors" constantly saying "oh my god, this is SO nice" or "wow, Facebook is easier on this than on my lappy" or "look, Googlemail is a dream" or "how does it find me so fast on Google Earth or Googlemaps" or "Wow.. I started typing a Spanish place name into Google Earth and it came up with my aunty's address from my adddress book incase it was what I was looking for" etc etc

Then get ready for loads of cool word games for free from Apple Store.

And never ear the end of it

Give O2 a phone before you take out another contract. I assume your wife is still within her minimum term on her current one? O2 might be able to do you some sort of deal. If not then they can always add on the web bolt-on for £7.50/month.

Well, the trouble is that the current O2 contract is through Carphone Warehouse, who I'll be calling tomorrow, and unless a miracle happens there's no way they'll be able to give me a 12 month SIM only contract with lots of minutes and texts and the free web/data bolt on.

I'll have to take the bullet and pay extra whilst I run two contracts and cancel the Carphone O2 and move the number to a contract directly with O2 ?...

Another option is that you can actually get a pay as you go simcard, which gives you unlimited 3g internet access for 12 months, they either have them in the o2 shops or you can get them from ebay. Obviously doesn't get you out of a contract if you are in one...

    Cheers,

Well, bugger me !, they matched O2's own offer

I had to pay a £19.99 admin charge as they stated that they make hardly any money on the deal, to be honest I was cool with this as cancelling their contract by sending them a recorded delivery letter and then mucking around with PAC codes etc was somethign I couldn't be bothered with as I've more important things to do.

The new contract goes live on the 19th Feb so I'll plonk the new SIM in the then and get the wife's e-mail setup on the iPhone.
