    Wiondows mobile series 7

What do people think of it? Looks quite nifty if you ask me, but does anyone know if it will be installable on older phones? Id be interested in giving it a go on my Touch pro 2 (Rhodium), especially after the boys at xda developers have had a play with it.

    Whens it officially out?

I've been pretty busy today so haven't had time to go through all the news about it, but it has my interest. Will be very interesting to see what it is like to actually use, I like the few screen shots I've seen so far.

Rumours suggest first devices to roll out around Sept, I think LG being possibly one of the first.

The HD2 has a capacitive screen and meets the specs I think - no doubt it'll work better on a tegra based device but I'd be shocked if we didn't see xda devs back porting it to all sorts of phones.

    Re: Wiondows mobile series 7

I had pondered the likelyhood of WM7 appearing on xdadev before its official release, but thats the type of thing that would really annoy MS. They did unleash the lawyers on xdadev a few years ago, both sides came to some kind of aggrement. Some ROMS did get taken down a few months back, I think that was related to the release of new stuff before it had been seen officially.

    Re: Wiondows mobile series 7

im a bit on the fence with this and so far i have the following views:

    For:
    It looks nice/fresh/modern
    Should be more stable/reliable
Better features and global things from other compatible devices

    Against:
Too much like apple, locking us in which is what i love about WM and hate the iphone for
Not much different to zune interface, dont know if i like that yet
    Compatibility with older programs

It seems MS has taken a leaf from apple in terms of lockin down and simple=win, i dont hate wm currently and like the basic display and everything is logical in terms of order etc. Making it simple with flashy gui = public demand but i dont want something similar to the iphone .
Locking the system so things like htc sense dont work is silly but at the same time a good idea, it does reduce a phone developers ability to diferentiate itself though .

However with all lockin down it reduces the in compatabilities and crashes that apple always boast about .

Ill wait till its out before i decide, MS should make it great though as it seems it is their time to shine(vista/7)

One of the things that people noted about WM7 on the HD2 is that its running a current version of tomtom. The latest comments by MS are that older software will work, but might need tweaking on the UI side.

I think we can assume a few things:

    - there's still a win32 API
    - there's a set of new API's for things to do with the new hubs etc
    - MS will provide great dev tools and emulators as per usual
    - full screen apps will work (mostly)
    - today screen apps won't - there's no today screen
    - replacement shells will probably be possible, but hopefully not desirable if MS have done a good job (after all Sense and SPB are products of a endemic problem with the today screen / phone UI being crap).
    - It won't be anywhere near as locked down/in as the iPhone - period. MS is a very different animal from Apple when it comes to developers and despite wanting to 'min spec' the hardware platform they're still not building anything other than the OS and a set of apps. I can't see it amounting to much more than making you work with their hub concepts in a certain way (much like there were rules for writing today plugins) and supporting basic things for fullscreen apps like pausing the task etc.

I really like the iPhone, i'm pretty Ok-ish with android (i run it but it's not really set my world on fire) but i'm currently still using WM 6.5.3 on a day to day basis as (aside from lacking the iPhone's slick UI - tho sense isn't half bad!) it meets my needs pretty well. I'm excited by this as a developer - this looks fun to program against and the full-on channel 9 demo shows some real promise. I'm guessing the SDK and emulator will ship for VS2010 so as soon as i've got that i'm going to have a play - i'm guessing summer?

So now we have WM6.5 + android both with sense on them, iPhone with it's icon/app centric approach and WP7 with it's data centric approach - things are getting interesting indeed! Personally I think MS have hit on something here - and I do think it's significantly different from both what they've done before and what the competition are up to. I'm staggered it's looking this good - I really expected a iPhone clone.

    Just a 'btw', it's Windows Phone 7 Series, or I guess WP7, not WM7.
