I just got an HTC desire on the 3 network, no upfront cost, £25 per month, 500 mins any network, 3000 mins 3 to 3 calls, 1gb internet usage, unlimited texts. Orange had offered similar deal but 300 mins and 500 mb internet usage for same price. Fantastic phone
I need to take time to read this thread fully (and the applications one as well) for now though can someone answer something for me?
What are the benefits of rooting (apart from de-branding) It gave me things like SBSettings/folders on my iPhone but it looks like android gives me some things (not folders) anyway, so what do I gain?
If you go to 3 their desires are not tied to them but are unlocked, dunno if that influences anyone
Some apps will only work if you root your handset, this is because they work at a much lower level that they are meant to. A friend of mine had an app to turn his Google Dev phone into a wireless access point back in December. This is now built into 2.2, but that isn't really out yet. This is just one example btw.
Have many people managed to actually get a desire on 3? I keep on trying to order one over the phone through a loyal customer offer they've offered my wife (I'm currently on o2 and want to swap), but they keep on telling me that they have none in stock and wont do the foreseeable future
I'm hoping to get one of these for my next upgrade, have heard nothing but good things about them. I had tried the original T Mobile G1 and didn't like it so much so sent it back, but it seems that Android has come on a lot further since then, can anybody confirm this who maybe also had the G1 please? x
I sent mine off last Tuesday. Today, am told mobo has been replaced, and that it should be back out to me shortly.
Wondering what best way to reinstall stuff is.... let's say the SD card has save games and footprints details on it... should I install apps (say, robo defence, etc) with a BLANK spare microSD in the slot, then turn off, and insert my OTHER microsd, which has got all the info on it from before having to do a factory reset/ send in or repair?
Any views?

I think you'll be fine to install with the usual SD card in. I've uninstalled and reinstalled things before and settings remain...
*Nods*
I'd think so, too.
If that's the case, you'll get a "thanks"

So 2.2 is supposedly around the corner for the Desire, I wonder now 3.0 'Gingerbread' has been announced if HTC will upgrade the Desire to it at some point. The Desire meets the minimum spec requirements from Google (1ghz, 512MB etc) so maybe ...
Reasons why Android is just so much better than any OS offered atm than any other OS imo
exciting times
Android 3.0 gets rid of sense so I should imagine its easy to port accross to the Desire as HTC dont have to writer Sense UI around this.

.... Where's the Any Key???
I think HTC might drag their heels over this one though. Like they have done for the Hero. If it does come they might do it months and months later to try and 'encourage' you to buy a newer phone with Gingerbread on it.
It will be interesting to see how Googles UI compares to the like of Sense. I would hope that if it does render Sense superfluous then HTC can come up with more of their own widgets.
