(sorry, can't find the exact page detailing it but loads of info there - just on my way out)
Pretty sure that this was dealt with ages ago... Hence why we can now load bare Android OS onto the Desire.

If that's the case - awesome

edit - got a link to a bare ROM that will run on it? All are looking HTC derived on XDA (eg. The 2.2 is non Europe HTC and hacked)

No mate, everything is fine and dandy. Anything in particular you are referring to? If I can I will test it out for you.

Im just unsure theres no going back after you done it and dont know whether just to wait for the official release. Although its tempting because lots of people have the Desire in the office and they are all daring me to do it (Test Dummy)

Of course you can go back. Just grab an official ROM and reflash it.

Rooting isn't as risky now, because of the one click program.

Plenty of root guides out there now. I used the one from rootmydroid site. But if you want a noob proof one I can try to get something up over the weekend.

I now have my HTC desire running froyo 2.2.

    This is what i did:

Downloaded and ran unrevoked 3 on my macbook pro. It makes you put the phone into usb debug mode.

That was it. Couldn't believe it was that easy.

I then got the latest 2.2 rom:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300

Download both the radio and the 1.0c rom.

follow the second part of this:

[HOWTO] Root Your HTC Desire in One Click! | Root My Droid

Make sure you copy the zip files onto the SD card as i unzipped them first.

    2 things to note:

    1. The first time i did it my phone got stuck on the android splash screen. booting into recovery mode and clearing the user data and davlik cache then installing the rom worked. some others have had this too.

    2. The H icon to indicate HSDPA doesnt work. You have to install:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778

(Make sure you get the 1.0c version for this particular rom. You get a nice battery indicator as well with it).

Hmm tempted to do this over the weekend

Does it matter if the phone is branded or not? Just that I know some people over at XDA are having issues with network branded phones

I would unlock it just in case, as sometimes it takes a few hours (sometimes a whole day) for the unlock code to get back to you.

People on Orange in particular should unlock their handsets first.
