No, you don't have to unlock your device. But some handsets on some networks, seem to network lock themselves for some reason (usually occurs when you update the radio).

So for this reason it is recommended that you unlock your handset before hand anyway.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Anyone know of a way to remove the volume limiter on the mp3 side of the device without actually rooting and using a customised ROM?

    Cool.

Mines on virgin as well and it's never been switched off so I don't really get to see the animation at the beginning

I've found that my virgin signal at home is a lot better than what my O2 ever was so i'm quite impressed!

There is no way to tell if you device will network lock, after root/flash. Hence why it is always advised to have a unlock code to stand by.

After you root it, you can custom flash stuff. So you can really drill down and specifically targets bits of Android OS. Already replaced my battery icon with a nifty circle icon with percent displayed

Hmm I followed the guide and manage to root, however after applying the new Rom the phone seems to hang at the android boot logo.

How long did yours stay on there after applying the Rom update ?

I left mine about 10 mins then decided to restore to make sure no issues and the old rim boots fine

Known issue. Boot back into recovery mode and clear the follow caches:

    1) Recovery Mode > Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache
    2) Recovery Mode > Wipe Cache Partition

    Hope that helps.

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Thought I would mention that since I rooted and flashed a different ROM my battery life has improved dramatically. I noticed it first, when during a normal day at work, when I got home my BL had only dropped by 25% (from full charge in the morning). And now today, I went out at 8, and got back for 6pm, and it was around 72%. So from 8am yesterday, to right now the BL stands at 57%. Very nice!

How do you unlock your device? never did that before in the illegal way. did you unlock yours by getting a code from your network provider?

Re: The Official HTC Desire Thread

Found the ultimate battery drain. Google Navigation. I kid you not. Left for Bradford this morning at 07:30am, and by the time we got there (around 09:30am) my battery level had plummeted to 38% (from 90% when I left home). It isn’t a huge issue for me, because I was just messing around with it, and seeing how good it would function as a GPS unit (alongside my TomTom). But still something to note. Another thing I noticed was how hot my Desire got. Sometimes it was warm to touch back in the early days while charging it. But this was literally hot to touch.

Other than that, still rocking as normal. Oh, Google Navigation wipes the floor with my TomTom.
