    HTC Vario IV

    Hi,

I've never been able to carry out a general windows update on this phone.

Every time I attempt update, I always get "Connection to update server was not available."

Have looked around for solutions - no luck - has anyone else had this problem/know how I can solve this?

    Cheers

    Re: HTC Vario IV

Well it might be by HTC, but if it is actaully a Vario, then it's by T-Mobile.

You will need to log into the HTC website (http://www.htc.com) to see if there are any updates or new ROMs. T-Mobile may not have authorised any updates for that device. Welcome to the wonderful world of operator custom operating systems on handsets.

This issue should be going away with both Apple and Microsoft (in WP7) forcing all hansets to use the same version regardless of the operator.

    Re: HTC Vario IV

Never thought about that funkstar, I know the Vario series are tweaked/modded/improved (allegedly) and can be tricky to unlock, so I think you are probably right.

    Re: HTC Vario IV

They are not "tweaked/modded/improved", they are just T-Mobile branded HTC handsets, slightly different casing, and some changes to the normal software (usually to the handsets detriment).

Shouldn't be too difficult to unlock, allowing you to install the standard HTC ROM or any custom ROM out there. have a look on HTCpedia.com or XDA-developers.com, that's where all the HTC hackers hang out.

    Re: HTC Vario IV

If you buy a branded phone which is unlocked it could have some odd effects if used with another carrier. One is better off buying a completely generic phone with the manufacturer software on it rather than one which has been used on a particular network. Or buy a phone which is on the network you use.
