    Os 4.0

So with the sneak preview of multitasking etc, who thinks that there will be a new iphone this year?

A collegue at work said hes read up that iChat is to be part of it at sometime - but surely you would need a forward facing camera? I'm still using my 3G and im on a rolling contract ready for the new one should it land this summer!

    Re: Os 4.0

There has to be - the 3GS is looking a bit old now and pretty low res compared to other smart phones. I'm not sure which way i'll jump this year - WP7 looks pretty cool and tbh i'm very happy with my WM6.5.5 touch diamond 2 now (which is bizzare seeing as how i'm constantly told WM is crap and yet running android on it doesn't feel any better at all!). I have multitasking now, so not having it on a new phone isn't an option.

    Re: Os 4.0

Going by timelines around the OS3/3GS release I've heard a date of ~ August for the next iPhone.
doubt I'll get one though, will see what WP7 looks like & maybe get a 3GS as they'll be cheaper

Shame I will struggle to move away from an iPhone though, I've spent too much money on apps & it'd be a waste to lose them all

    Re: Os 4.0

I'm considering going back to the dark side and getting an iPhone when the new one comes out (my prediction is for it to be announced end of june, released mid july).

Windows Phone 7 looks to be crap and heavily locked down, so that negates all the useful/good things about Windows Mobile...Android is still interesting but i'm not amazed by any of the phones that are released yet - still none with snapdragon + a hardware keyboard, and both HTC+googles on screen keyboards are shocking compared to the apple one. Yes I know I could install Swype or similar but even then its not as nice to use imo.

SO I might be switching back to an iPhone, but who knows..I will reserve judgement until the new one is announced. Who knows there may be another good HTC device by then for me to replace my Touch Pro with!

    Re: Os 4.0

The parallels between iPhone OS and WP7 on 'locked down' kinda negate that as an argument to discard the latter IMHO - especially now Apple has locked down thing even further in OS4! Personally I think WP7 looks pretty interesting in that it's distinctly different from Apple's offering and I'll await actual devices/software before writing it off..

This - I was thinking that a July release, more than likely to be towards the later of that month.

I'm certainly not going to upgrade from a 3G TO 3GS. Just dont see the point of it.

    Re: Os 4.0

The developer release is pretty slick I must say - the multi-tasking and folder implementation is very nice

I found an interesting bug with the exchange integration and meeting requests - it kept alerting me over and over and over for a meeting I'd already accepted, the only way to fix it was via outlook on the pc..

That said, I'm finding things like the threaded messaging, and combined mailboxes quite useful

It does seem generally faster too.

    Re: Os 4.0

I'll wait for the new iPhone before getting any upgrade (which is long overdue). I'll play with my friend's HTC Legend at some point too. All I need is essentially are the features you would find in every regular phone (calls, SMS, music player, calendar, calculator etc.), couple of applications you would find in many phones these days (some kind of trackID, Googlemap, basic browser etc.). And then, two must have applications: Anki support (flashcard application), and the best portable Japanese dictionary and a good way to input Japanese characters (touch screen of sort is a must). That's all I need in terms of features. Faster the better, balanced with longer the battery life the better. So really, the iPhone 3GS would be fine for me even if it's only for the faster performance of my 2G, but I still want to see what the one after (and OS 4.0) brings on the table.

If they can make the character input optimised for Japanese too rather than Chinese only in OS4.0, it will really make my day. Incidentally, this is if character input on the Android or Microsoft phone is good, it would get my attention too. Windows' IME pad is still the best I've used yet.

Fact, see the stories on not being able to use third party translation tools - seemingly another move against adobe and flash translators for iPhone. The platform certainly isn't getting more liberal..

    Re: Os 4.0

I can already hear the complainers complain that this is a huge stretch and that OS 4 will be much better than these jailbreak apps. Well, yes you’re right. OS 4 will probably do a better job than these jailbreak apps or tweaks, but the point is to show you that Apple didn’t reinvent the wheel at all and that you don’t need to wait for this summer to get OS 4 rocking on your iPhone.

    Re: Os 4.0

I won't be upgrading my iPhone to OS4 until it is Jailbroken - I like using apps like BiteSMS that are only available on a JailBroken phone. The BBC iPlayer also only works on Jailbroken and my kids use it all the time when we are out and about!
