Re: Which phone handset OS would you buy?

Blasphemy! Windows Mobile deserves to be in a seperate section!.

Honestly, WM to me has done its job VERY well such as the following:
    1. Great file support
    2. Easy to navigate- Logical locations
    3. Registry- I can edit the device to my liking, not some generic one
    4. Reliability- Had only a handful of crashes which too me is reliable when i installed custom roms!
    5. Applications- loads of em , much more useful apps than apples/android.... FPSECE is the psx emulator so i can run tekken etc on my HD2 so thats a win there.
    6. Gaming-- As above
    7. Email- Bloody easy for me, tap a button and im done, havent used blackberry

    8. IT WORKS!- Yes, this it what i love because its simple but a very versatile OS so IMO pisses on the competition, i never had a problem finding what i needed and compatibility aint hit me.

I know people say WM is not "touch friendly" but i have to disagree, that is based on the older WM version however if you try the newer 6.5.5 (or is it .3?) WM its alot more touch based faster and is a good improvement over its previous version without loosing its advantage. Suffice to say I would happily buy a WM device again but really it would have to be accompanied by a good handset (HD2 currently woo) so i can enjoy console games and great films along with alot of work .

Re: Which phone handset OS would you buy?

I agree with hicks, but I have been using wm for more than 5 years, so I'm very familiar with it.

Regarding the desire, is there anything i need to do before letting the auto-update for android run?

Surely if your on a Touch HD2, you don't really have to deal with WM. You deal with TouchFlo? TouchFlo is fine, WM is a horrible thing.

Touchflo is great but i also use it without HTC's version on it, I use the normal WM style which is that sliding homescreen (up/down) which is really easy to use and doesnt have so much imagery like the HTC version does (albeit great, can be annoying). Also the touchflo doesnt extend everywhere, a fair amount of it still is WM but even that is very good now with 6.5.5, the difference between XP and windows 7 (smaller scale obviously).

edit: Also, i use custom SMS and other things which is an added bonus with WM as its so easy to edit .

    Symbian
It is the most powerful mobile OS but the whole problem is the fact that the GUI was not provided by Symbian but the OEM i.e Nokia with S60 or SonyEricsson with UIQ. Hopefully Symbian^3 shall turn the outdated look into a thing of the past because since the symbian foundation came into play, its all open-source and the GUI provided is standard - not additionally developed.

Re: Which phone handset OS would you buy?

So I gave away the Desire and I need to buy a new one... anyone seen any good deals?

I am tempted to wait for the iphone 4 specs to come out first though (despite admittedly being an anti-ifanboy) as I quite like the idea of 960x640 (I am a resolution whore too). Pity the iphone OS sucks compared to android, but if it it is hacked so you can put android on, I might consider it. Well actually, it will probably cost double the desire, so it's probably not worth it anyway unless you like your wallet iRaped.

The Palm Pre Plus is worth a look at:

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/20/p...i-plus-review/

However,a higher resolution screen would be nice and perhaps a faster CPU.

    What about the Motorola Droid?

Symbian is not in any way "powerful". It lacks pretty much every feature required of a modern multitasking OS. It should stay on £10 candybars, where it belongs.

Symbian was awesome back in the day (~2002). It was the first proper mainstream smartphone OS. It doesn't look like it evolved fast enough though, so it has been left far behind. When I first used it (nokia 7650), it did support multitasking IIRC, something which the iphone still can't do

I'm not sure I would call it awesome, even back then. I think it was more it was the first and probably at that point 'only' smartphone OS.

Re: Which phone handset OS would you buy?

Hehe, the Psions which ran EPOC (the pre-cursor to Symbian OS) back in the late 1990's supported multi-tasking so the fact that Apple want to both charge their users for multi-tasking support as well as only allowing newer hardware to support multi-tasking blatantly shows their support to the obsolescence of hardware their produce. If say, a Nokia N73 which has about 8mb of free ram (a 2005 phone I think) support multi-tasking why cant the older iphones, which have about 60mb of free ram?

My 5800 and N97 have 60mb of free RAM and are quite optimised so are actually multi-tasking beasts - I can use the web, listen to the radio and have numerous email and messaging apps open in the background without lag. I think it all comes down to how the OS and its assets handle RAM use and how effectively developers release RAM after applications are used and closed.

Yeah, I always 'kinda' liked Windows Mobile, as long as I didn't have to directly interact with it. Then I tried Android... I could never go back.
