    NOOB! iphone? htc?.....

ok, so haven't been bothered to keep up with phones in years and now i'm interested. i drive a taxi and someone i had in (02 employee) showed me his iphone 3gs and some of the apps, satnav, freeview tv etc. Ii'll be driving when the world cup is on so watching freeview (iphone, dash mounted) on the move sounded pretty cool.

but i've been on here a few years checking out apps and computer related things and noticed a lot of chat about the htc and android.

so.. in a nutshell... what to get? and why?

probably could google a few reviews but would rather have honest opinions from guys who'd know their stuff... cheers!

    Re: NOOB! iphone? htc?.....

Ah fair enough then mark .

Well what is your budget to start with? Apple iphones are ok if all you want is a gadget that is able to do every gimmicky thing (fun for a few hours imo). HTC phones will give you the best video performance and overall because of the spec, that is of course depending on what model you choose. Is the operating system an issue? Might be able to bag a HTC HD2 for a smallish fee now and they are damn good (i have one xD), the HTC Desire is also very good and runs on android it is pretty much the same as the google nexus (made by HTC) but with some cosmetic changes basically.

Does the freeview work via an ariel or something? I ask because without an ariel then relying on a 3g connection for live channels could be a bad idea.

    Re: NOOB! iphone? htc?.....

You aren't going to be able to watch Freeview, no phones on the market have DVB-T tuners.

iPlayer on the other hand is available for these. I don't know if ti works over 3G or if you need to be connected to a wirless network though.

The other way of doing it is to get a Slingbox for your home, then install the slingbox app on the handset, this will enable you to get anything you can watch at home available on your handset. this can be an iphone or an android device. I'm not sure if there is a Windows Mobile Slinbox app, so I don't know if this will work on the Touch HD2.

I think he is probably talking about using tvcatchup via 3G connection.

I am no expert in smartphones as I still have a Nokia 6230, but do want to get a HTC Desire.

    Re: NOOB! iphone? htc?.....

If you got a phone that's getting Android 2.2 soon/already (Nexus one, Desire etc) you could use it to watch TV Catchup I guess since it'll have Flash 10.1.

Mark, I suggest you to wait a bit longer. Apple will release their new iPhone soon (mid june?), or at least unleash it at their annual conference. And I'm sure to compete, other brands such as HTC, Nokia, Sony, etc, will release their own to rival the next gen iPhone. 4G is emerging too. You might as well wait a bit longer
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

And your sure that the new iPhone will be better than anything on the market currently or was it just a slip when you used the word rival? After all what new stuff's have the previous iPhones brought to the table?
