    iPhone 4 Announced

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/07/iphone_4/

what are your thoughts? I personally can't see anything groundbreaking like the original iPhone had, and as an Android fan, I don't see anything other than the high-res screen being appealing

    Re: iPhone 4 Announced

Yet again another fairly disappointing device from Apple. I'm not saying it looks bad, but does it really look any more revolutionary than the 3G? The screen I have to admit looks stunningly clear and bright, but other than that, the specs are no better than a Desire, and if I lived in the US i'd be having the HTC Evo 4G over the iPhone 4 any day of the week.

What use is video calling that is only iPhone to iPhone over a wireless network, when on many other handsets proper video calling can be had over a 3G signal? I mean come on, my old Sony Ericsson could do it!

Also whatever happened to touch-sensitive casings, near-field technology and other things which would have made the handset stand out. As it is now, once you've got past the initial wow factor of the screen it looks thoroughly standard!

    Re: iPhone 4 Announced

As much as I dislike the iPhone, the original was a game changer at the time.

But that interface is getting real old now. Just a bunch of app icons on several screens? Nah, I think I'll have some proper tabs or panels with actual information on them thank you very much. See the HTC Sense UI, or WebOS (had a quick play with one in an O2 shop, mmmmmm lovely!!). "there's an app for that" well, that's just wonderful, but I'll take my fully integrated Facebook or Twitter client instead thanks very much.

Thinking about this, I'm really surprised how far behind Apple are on this front. Everyone else has integrated social media functions built into the phone, pulling all your contacts from different sources into the one area. This is fantastic and yet on the surface the iPhone UI hasn't changed in the past 3 years.

One of the reasons video calling never took off has been the cost, pretty much always 50p/min, plus no way of knowing if the other person could receive a video call.

I presume with this, going over wifi means there's no extra cost, and it'll probably tell you if you can switch to a video chat with the other person.

But you're right, it's still not much use, unless it becomes available to other phones, and across the 3G network.

Apple devices are for people who don't create anything, just consume.

Blackberry actually has something you can input to rather than just absorb output.

It's not the cost that was the problem...

Have you ever wondered why lots of apps aren't capable of running over 3G only via Wi-Fi? i.e. Skype for example, video calls, SlingPlayer, iPlayer app etc.

Simple answer - if suddenly everyone started using video calls/Skype etc. [and I mean imagine how many iPhones is out there] 3G network would collapse/got so saturated that it'd be impossible to make that call.

Don't get mislead 3G networks aren't any different that doorbell wire provided by BT.

Underinvestment in infrastructure in the past hurts us badly these days...

Nothing to do with Apple and what iPhone can or cannot do.

Its all about 3G network providers.

Then why does skype on my windows mobile work fine on 3g, why does Fring (android video calling software) work fine on 3G too

I can use iPlayer on my x1 too, it's not great on 3g compared to youtube but both do work

    Re: iPhone 4 Announced

Video calls-pah, were hyped when 3 came out & are just s useless now. I do like the new look, much nice than the old ones, as for features nothing grabs me apart from the video/Screen res but it's not massively unique in those respects.
Porting my existing app store purchases over is a big + for me but that just shows how locked in I actually am

Tariffs for O2 are out http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/tariffs.html
Seems to be slightly cheaper than the old ones (then again I don't pay them much attention) 18month/£30 is 'reasonable' - pending handset prices!

But that's so unlike him! Everything Steve Jobs says is wholly truthful and brings great things unto the world and showers little kiddies with candy and smiles and rainbows, he said so himself!

I remember when Apple changed the screen on the 2007 20" iMac to a TN which was worse than the older iMac model it replaced which had an IPS screen.

I always expect Steve and the Marketing bunch to overstate the abilities of their hardware. Most people won't bother to check the facts. I suspect even now it has been shown to be bull, it won't change a thing.
