    LG intouch max GW620 question

My dad bought the GW620 yesterday, as an upgrade from a Sony Ericsson. Now he used the Sony Ericsson, as a modem to connect his laptop to the internet. He was told in the shop that the GW620 can be used as a modem, but there was no disc or any other info in the box. I phoned LG and was told the GW620 can not be used as a modem, then t-mobile said it could be. I have no idea what software to download, in order to use the phone as a modem. On the Sony Ericsson there is an option to set the phone, to act as a modem, when it is plugged into a laptop/pc. On this LG phone there is no such option at all, at not that i can see (there is a wireless option for the phone).

Does anyone have any information at all ?

edit: forgot to add that the laptop picked it up as new hardware. But said it could not install it as coudl not find the software, or something to that effect.

What is that?? Is there not an LG software for it? When I plugged the phone in and windoes looked for drivers, it had the name LG usb modem. So after looking on the lg site I found that driver, which was on page talking about the sync software. So downloaded the driver and installed it all ok, in the device manager it now says the phone is installed no problems (no ! in a yellow circle) But still can't connect to the net.

Is there some LG pc suite?? can't seem to find it on the LG site. This has to be the worst phone, i mean why not included the software?

The real confusion I have is whether, this phone has a built in modem or not! On the virgin media phone it leave the column blank.

You never said that was your problem.

If you want help with an issue, and describe it badly, you won't get the advice you want.

    Right then.

You need to make sure the phone is set to tethering mode. Where the setting is varies depending on the model of phone, and I haven't used a GW620, but on the HTC Hero, it's in the Wireless settings menu, at the bottom, like here: http://img18.imageshack.us/i/p4131282.jpg/

When you enable sharing, it disables use as a USB disk.

Re: LG intouch max GW620 question

    Sorry only remembered after posting.

In the settings menu i have the following:

    Wi-Fi
    Wi-Fi settings
    Bluetooth
    Bluetooth settings
    Mobile networks
    Airplane mode

In the wi-fi settings menu it has:
the option to turn wi-fi on
    netowrk notification
And you can dd wi-fi networks

I don't see any tethering mode. Do you use your phone as modem for a laptop?

    Thanks

Yes. Via USB it's a standard function on the Hero, and with an extra app, you can do it over WiFi.

I spent a few hours looking for LG software for this phone, but have found nothing that i would trust. Most of it has been on free download sites :| Looking at the wifi option its only to hook onto an existing wireless network.

I'll call LG tomorrow and try and figure this out. Just can't believe they don't supply the connection software As I said the Sony Ericsson was fine with its installation disc.

edit: Wait a sec do I need the wifi on the phone to be turned on?? At the moment it is switched off.

For tethering via USB, WiFi is completely unrelated and uninvolved.

Re: LG intouch max GW620 question

Spoke to another LG guy (who shoudl really improve his customer service skills), and was told again this phone can not be used as a modem!! When I looked at the instruction book on page 90, it does state it can be used as a modem. I think I understood the LG guy to say that the phone can be used as a modem, but the version of the phone we had could not (I don't know).

So does anyone work for t-mobile on here can clarify, why this phone is sold as having a built in modem? Or any LG who can explain what the LG guy said in lay man terms?

    Thanks

Re: LG intouch max GW620 question

    Layman terms.

There is no "built-in modem" or anything modem-related going on.

The functionality you need is the ability to share the device's Mobile Broadband (3G) connection. This is usually termed "connection sharing" or "tethering".

Tethering functionality is a core part of the Android OS. It can, however, be removed from the default Android install, either by the mobile phone company, or at the request of the network operator who sells the phones. As an example there, an HTC Hero sold by Orange in the UK has tethering out of the box, but an HTC Hero sold by Sprint in the USA cannot be tethered as standard.

If a phone lacks a tethering option in the menus, then it isn't hard to re-add it. There are plenty of apps in the Google Market to help re-add tethering functionality (and these apps are popular because US networks tend to disable tethering functions)

I've seen it suggested that the GW620 on T-Mobile does NOT have a tethering option as standard - if this is indeed the case, then you'd need to use an app like EasyTether to add that ability.

  13. Received thanks from:

I'll have a look for it. But will most likely go back to the shop and either get them to do it, or provide a phone that has a modem built in. I'm away working from tuesday and my dad is away this weekend, so not a lot of time plus he would call be for help. Not sure what other other phones that have a modem + qwerty pull out keyboard, and that t-mobile supply hmmm

    Thanks for your help!

Re: LG intouch max GW620 question

Went back to the t-mobile tore today and was given some info, on how to use this phone as a modem. I was told to use the setup wizard to create a new dial up connection. So I did this and in the phone number box i put *#09# which is what I was told to do. But it will no connect, any ideas?

edit: its *99# for the hpone number grrrr.

    Anyway all sorted.
