    SIM only contract

My contract with O2 has been up for a while, and frankly speaking, it is a pretty awful contract compared to what's available nowadays (it was fine when I took it due to the cashback, but I should've looked for a better deal as soon as the contract was up).

I'll probably give the iPhone 4 a miss due to the cost. However I am sticking with the iPhone platform given that my most used application (more texts/calls) lacks an equally good alternative on other platforms. If that mean staying on my 2G till I can get a 3GS cheapish on Ebay, so be it.

In terms of usage, I am looking for at least 250min, 100text, 500MB data (1GB preferred really, rare as they may be). Contract wise, I'll accept 12 months, but monthly is even better. The truth is that I may end up elsewhere for work in the next 12 months.

Will see if O2 retention can offer anything worthwhile. However, based on what others have reported, there probably won't be much.

The best deal I've seen is Tesco, with 500min, unlimited text and data for £15. Has anyone seen better?

With normal smartphone contracts, I often see 'Unlimited Wi-Fi'. What does it actually refer to? BTOpenZone? Are those usually excluded from SIM only contracts?

Last question, can I port into/out of a SIM only contract the same way as other contracts?

    Cheers.

    Re: SIM only contract

Why not drop down to one of O2's Simplicity tarrifs, either PAYG, 30 day rolling contracts or 12 month contracts...

    http://www.o2.co.uk/explore/tariffs/...hly/simplicity

I'm paying £10 per month for unlimited text, 500mb internet and calls coming out of the credit (which currently stands at over £30)

Yeah, it was my first choice, especially given that I am on O2 broadband. I'll see if O2 will at least give me a discount on it, but if they don't, then it's £15+5 for 300/Unlimited/500MB. Basically £5 more than Tesco, for less minutes/data.

They will, I have it The discount is applicable if you have any O2 call plan at all.

It makes all the difference when I'm comparing plans, cos you effectively have to add £5pm to everyone else's.

O2 simplicity you will get bummed on data usage

Do you mean the cap or because their coverage is pretty poor? Because there's a 500mb limit on most of the plans which I find to be quite adequate...

    Re: SIM only contract

Ah, except on the PAYG tariffs, like I went for

Edit: Well it sort of still is £5 extra but I'm still not complain at £10 per month and £5 off my broadband bill.

Edit, Edit: And freebies for topping up each month. And I amass credit from topping up. I don't know why I didn't go to this plan ages ago!

    Re: SIM only contract

Ah, I don't want PAYG, I'll travel a bit in the coming months and push come to shove, I'd rather be hit by a large bill on the way back than stuck without a phone. T-Mobile is definitely better than O2 bare any discount but Tesco beats it unless I need to call oversea from the UK.

    Re: SIM only contract

O2 Simplicity 12m for smartphones/iphones- 300 mins, unlimited texts, 500mb internet, unlimited wifi
    £15 x 12 = £180
    - Quidco £100
    = £80
    = £6.67 per month.

    Hard to beat imo.

    +1 for this.

I did the same thing, plus the £5 I save on broadband every month; can't beat it.

Edit: My cash back took about 3 months to come through.

    Re: SIM only contract

Ditto. That's exactly what I'm paying too. Although, I don't like the O2 as a network for data so my next contract will be with T-Mobile or Vodafone. They also have quidco deals.. but in general imo a few extra quid a month is not too bad for something you use every day of the year.

I'm not sure you can do a port of 1 number to another on the same network.. I THINK t-mobile lets you do it. But anyway, if you really want to keep your number, there is a (convoluted) way to do it:

Currently on O2 network, want to buy O2 contract sim
    1. Buy / order a free pay as you go sim from another network
    2. Transfer your number to that sim
    3. Once complete, transfer the number to your new sim

    Re: SIM only contract

I'm out of contract now too (I was with Orange), and I found a better SIM-only contract with T-Mobile for 40% of the price of my Orange contract. This didn't really make much sense to me - they're effectively two halves of the same company now, so I don't see the sense in them undercutting each other like this - but I'm not complaining, because I'll be saving a ton of money every month.

It sucks that all the networks decided to end their "unlimited" data policies at the same time, but it was never truly unlimited anyway so at least they're being more upfront about usage limits now.

It's all about GiffGaff if you ask me.

Owned by O2, using O2 transmitters; run by the public.

    Unlimited == unlimited!
