    Re: HTC or i phone?

iPhone is good but is it worth the investment, I have an iPhone 4 and yes I do think it's a great handset and you can pretty much do all you like with it but your basically paying a lot more money for the design and name. HTC is cheaper and very competitive with regards to functionality but then it comes down to appearance, and i in particular like the appearance of the iPhone.

Guessing the author of this thread has likely made a decision already, but if not then hang on till the HTC release the Desire Z (desire with qwerty pull out keypad)

    Re: HTC or i phone?

Neither, Samsung Galaxy S. I have the Desire and the SGS. The SGS with the latest official JM1 build or the Froyo beta JPC works a treat.

Depends what you class as Standard phone

There are better phones out there but it all depends on what you want out of a phone.

    Yes I grant you that

although out of every phone on the market just now it would either be a

BB or an iPhone, BB are more for business users so I opted for the iPhone....never looked back

    Re: HTC or i phone?

You can't just say a BB or an iPhone. First they are aimed at very different markets and have very different features in many respects. Also that's a bit like saying a Samsung vs. a Nokia N95. You are comparing a manufacturers whole range of handsets with a single handset from a single manufacturer.

It's just like the original question at the top of the thread: HTC or iPhone. Well which HTC are we talking about? Android or Windows Mobile? Not really a proper comparison.

In my mind and for what I have read up on it would have either been a BB or an iPhone

I chose an iPhone as the BB was more for business users, this is my own thoughts

    Re: HTC or i phone?

    I still don't understand that.

I'm not trying to tell you want to think, I'm just wondering why you decided that to came down to two very different classes of handset. The iPhone is media centric, which it's large touch screen and iTunes integration. All the BBs except the Storm have keypads or keyboards and are communication centric. The Android handsets are much closer to the iPhone than the anything BlackBerry do, even the storm if you ask me.

In my mind it's like you were thinking about either buying either a BMW 5 series or any Land Rover/Range Rover but didn't consider any of the other luxury saloons out there at all.

(the only reason for those choices of car manufacturer was for contrast, i'm not comparing the phones to those actual cars)

    Re: HTC or i phone?

man... i'm torn between Desire and iphone 4. Desire is great because of the level of customisation you can do, and I think I would take advantage of that. I have a feeling i'm gonna be spending a lot of time screwing around with it though. Apparently the iphone 4 just does pretty much everything you'd want out the box. Feels a little dis-empowering, but I suppose it was made for the general population in mind.

One thing people never seem to mention when saying iphone 4 is expensive is that it holds its value. Look at the price deprecation of iphone 3g / 3gs in comparison with the 100's of andriod phones. There's still gonna be strong demand (hence good price) for iphone 4 if you decide to sell it in 2yrs time.

    Re: HTC or i phone?

One thing the iPhone is very bad at is having information on the home screen. It doesn't do widgets, so if you want to get to a setting you have to drill down, Android can have that as a button on the home screen. Want to know your call totals for the month and today? you'd need to launch an app or drill through settings, I have a widget on my home screen for that. Time and weather too are right there when you turn the screen on... if you add the widgets.

It's about having information and content right there as soon as you use your phone. This is what WP7 is built around and apparently does very well. Apple launched a revolutionary interface with the iPhone, but they haven't moved on since, others have. It will be interesting to see if they update their interface any time soon, I wonder how tied they are to that interface.

    Re: HTC or i phone?

Well being in the luxury position of owning both phones I can offer a dual perspective.

The iPhone hardware is better, by that I mean the camera and flash. The camera takes far better quality pictures, and now with iOS 4.1 and HDR it does make them look better, mainly indoor pictures. Don't expect to do rapid shots though as HDR take about 3 seconds to save. The screen on the iPhone 4 is gorgeous to look at. The iPhone Apps are better than the ones in the Droid Market. Most websites, companies have iPhone Apps specifically, so thats a plus for Apple.

On the Desire side, whats it got going, well its cheaper for a start. You can add/remove the memory stick (I'd opt for a class 4 or above, particularly with FroYo and HD Recordings), removable battery, widget customization on the home screens. Plus full integration with Google Services. iPhone has this but not to the extent that Android has, you really have to setup Exchange Services on the iPhone to get calendar and contact sync. There are some good quality apps though for it. Tweetdeck for Android is pretty well done. I like the OTA updates on the Desire.

My Desire is my main phone (basically because I didn't want to try and chop up my main SIM) battery life is awful for me, I get less than a day really before it needs charging. I can't say for the iPhone as its not used as heavily as the Desire is. Part of me is frightened that I'll smash the iPhone by dropping it again, it feels weighty and heavy in my hand. I hate the lump of junk that is iTunes though, and the fact you can't customize the phone enough. Apple are way too strict. I can't choose a song on there and set it as a ringtone or alert, as a result, the majority of people have the default Apple tones on their phone.

Which do I prefer? TBH they both great devices. If you want something that just works and not too fussed about customization and you want to be 'in with the crowd' - iPhone. If you like to tinker and have a nice customizable device the Desire. Personally I don't want to conform to the Apple crowd, so prefer the Desire. :-)

    Re: HTC or i phone?

With the Desire is there any way of automatically syncing with podcasts when they come out?

I have an iphone now, and itunes looks after the podcasts for me, downloads the new ones, and deletes the ones I've listened to, when I sync the iphone. Other than the phone/SMS/email, I only really use twitter and music/podcasts. Does the Desire have good support for music/podcasts? What software can you use on your desktop to manage it all?
