    Apple Doom and Gloom Read...

While I don't own a 'smartphone' and the outcome isn't particularly of any interest to me the observations in this article were quite interesting i thought, i know there a few happy Android users on here too.

Re: Apple Doom and Gloom Read...

It's a good article - something of interest to me though is how do Apple fair against Android in the UK market where the iPhone *is* actually on every carrier? It removes the supposition that carrier lock-in is the chief factor - leaving it just down to the phones to battle it out.

I do think the phone market is very fickle - and very much fashion-led. Apple do well out of this (they are, after all, all about 'brand' and badge) but it amazes me how people think nothing else can take the market away from them because they're so dominant. A few years ago there wasn't an iPhone and look where it is now.

Android was much the same - but recent releases have really seen the platform mature and Google's N1 push of the hardware side really did the job too. Personally I think Froyo was the big step needed (and almost entirely because it frees apps from the main memory (meaning games can be far bigger for example)) to round it off - 2.1 (which dominates right now) is/was wonderfully functional. Pass a 2.1 phone to an iPhone owner and they love it - they marvel at the silly stuff like live wallpapers (but oohh it's so pretty) but really hook onto the idea of widgets ("what? you mean I can choose how my phone looks/works?").

WP7 will be MS' big push onto the market - many will write it off because of what came before but people don't really care about 'platforms' on phones and if the GUI works and the features are slick it stands as much chance as any device. Apple aren't thick - they can see Android taking off, they've got an eye on MS' effort and I can't help but wonder if we're going to get a very different iPhone in terms of UI in the future. Only apple are pushing the 'grid of icons' approach now - Google via HTC and MS seem to be going down the route of information on your homescreen, pulling all your 'lifestyle' stuff together in an attractive and practical way. Apple risk people getting bored - yes the iPhone 4 has a great screen but, literally, what else? Other than that I felt it was pretty much the 3GS again.

Apple don't feel much like the innovator in phones right now - they truly revolutionized the market at one time but it's getting a bit jaded.

Re: Apple Doom and Gloom Read...

WP7 will be a competent competitor to iOS 3, with no choice of apps. It doesn't multitask, and it doesn't run old WM apps, and seems to be trying to compete with where Apple were a year or two ago.

It's all about the apps- so thats a microsoft fail for v1

    - but microsoft can afford to abort, retry and fail as many times as they like

The iphone is the still the best mobile gaming platform, and best browser IMO
though I think android now just needs more of the top app developers to move over from iphone.

Certainly, a few years ago the original xbox was derided by Sony. MS often play the long game and often well.

The iPhone wins on games from one point of view, but actually my HTC desire lets me run ScummVM to play all my favourite point and click games such as monkey island, full throttle and broken sword. Then theres a whole bunch of emulators, most recently a fully working Ps1 emulator giving me final fantasy 7!

As for the browser, you can't be serious? Both are webkit based and can do much the same but Android on the htc hero or desire gives flash content and will be full flash 10.1 once I get my hands on froyo, meaning access to any video or gaming sites I want! Also the android browser can sync favourites etc to Chrome on my pc.....

Android = Winner all round I say!

The browser is faster on Android too - it's not a battle Apple can win any more. I agree on the gaming one - as I said 2.1 is hamstrung by internal memory for apps and so i expect the 2.2 rollout to encourage better gaming on the platform. Lots of iPhone apps are being ported too.

Yup and on my Desire it works incredibly well with up to 12 multi-touch presses detected at once, so the (small yet perfectly formed) on screen controls work like a dream!

Have just been trying Wipeout and Gran Turismo, GT was a little slow with stuttery sound but Wipeout was perfect,y as is FF7 which I am playing through at the mo! But considering we are on first public version of PSXdroid, I expect iit to get better and better!

Oh and might I add that all this kinda stuff can be gotten without any "rooting", "jailbreaking" or the like....

    Not quite.

No matter how bigger mac fan boy you are Visual Studio is better than xCode, by a huge margin. Factor in things like Silverlight and XAML vrs their idea of separation of concerns. Writing an App is easier on WM7.

Then comes in XNA. MS have already shown to devs how easy it is to write XNA games that will play on the xbox 360, windows desktop and the win7 phone. Not bad return on investment eh!

I don't want 200,000 apps, I probably will only ever use 20 or so, mostly games on top of default OS based ones. One or two killer games is all that is required. MS know this, they bought Halo and stopped it been on anything but the xbox for the launch for this reason.

That's a very good point - and a hard one to make if you're not a developer - but MS really do pump out some of the best stuff for coders - be it environments or frameworks. There's huge potential (in my eyes) for WP7 given what it's built on but people focus on the short term and as I said, MS aren't playing for that (no company really ever should). WM actually did very well for years - but stagnated and certainly didn't innovate and was caught out by it. That said, if you were a Windows developer (there's one or two) it was a doddle to transfer your skills - be it .NET, MFC or just plain Win32.
