Exclamation iPhone 4 and Google Sync Issue

My sister just got her iPhone 4 upgrading from her Blackberry on Vodafone. We just spent 2 hours following the instructions on how to transfer her contacts; this also included a 1 hour 15 minute call to the Vodafone iPhone helpline. It turns out the instructions to use Google sync for the iPhone 4 is pointless; the iPhone 4 has an issue with Google Sync.

Therefore hence this warning: If you are migrating contacts via Google Sync for an iPhone 4, don't bother wasting your time. Find an alternate method. If you are on Vodafone don't listen to them; a) they can't help and b) they treat you like an idiot.

The best method is to export your Google contacts as a CSV or VCARD. Then open up Outlook or Windows Mail and import them into there for now. That will sync with your iTunes. You have to change the contacts each way if you make a change, but should sort for the moment while the sync is sorted hopefully ... I'd like Google Sync to work too!

Did you set it up as Exchange? I did and it works fine. Follow here:

Yep, those are the exact method we used. The problem is that her phone keeps saying the exchange password is incorrect. Even Vodafone admitted it was a problem going from Blackberry to iPhone 4 (exporting/importing contacts).

    Weird.

I just setup a 3GS for mum, had to use Nokia PC Suite to export contacts to a csv, import those into her Google, then setup the Exchange sync. All contacts and calendars came down fine.

Is it a GMail account or GoogleMail?

The process works fine for any other model of iPhone, just not the iPhone 4. The vodafone guy tried it and tried it and failed miserably.

At the end of the day, my sister got very frustrated with the "Apple: it just works" iPhone 4, gave up with exporting/importing contacts and decided to add them in manually. It did mean she cleaned up her phone book though!

Re: iPhone 4 and Google Sync Issue

One issue I noticed is certain fields do not come down, its an Exchange issue. So for example, if you have 3 MOBILE numbers all under mobile in Google, only one will come down. Also if you have OTHER as a field for a number it won't come down either. I think you can have 3 EMAIL, 1 MOBILE, 3 WORK, 1 HOME as fields. Its a pain, cos a few on my friends have like 3 mobiles now, so they have all had to go in different fields just so I can get the sync working properly.

Daft question, have you done a restore on the iPhone and started again?
