I prefer HTC Desire... I never liked Samsung phones... even though the samsung also runs Android.
Since you already got the Samsung I hope the best with your new phones. Nothing against Samsung, they've been in the market for a while now, so I'm sure they have great stuff, just preference
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

was going with the galaxy but its has not camera flash and im out a lot at night with the BABES(you know what i mean fellas ;-) ) so went with the desire dont regret it, the desire rocks.
I've got the SGS but now wish I'd got the desire instead. SGS isn't a bad phone but the build quality isn't there compared to the desire.
A couple of my friends have said the Galaxy is buggy. One of them even returned it and got iphone 4 instead. I think the Desire is better than Galaxy in terms of software reliability.
Answer to this very much depends if you get a phone locked to a network. The Galaxy S is riddled with bugs and problems that are being ironed out with updates. But if you are stuck to a network (like three) that doesn't release the updates then you are stuck with a buggy phone.
The desire has very few issues and is a better finished phone, quality, build and software. The Galazy is the technical superior phone, faster GPU speed and bigger and better screen, but is let down by flakey software, flakey hardware and cheap feel.
I'd personally choose the Galaxy S if i was picking now, though i do own and love my desire.
If you get the galaxy s head over to XDA-Developers and flash a cooked rom onto it, this irons alot of bugs out. Also the galaxy s is seeing froyo in the next few days officially so bear that in mind.
Good luck with what you choose, both are fantastic phones. The desire is the best phone i have ever owned.
EDIT - on a side note, there are two new Desire variations due to hit stores next month. Perhaps these are worth checking out. Desire HD and DesireZ.
Your all useless, I'm in the market for a new phone (early days) and was hoping for a definitive answer from you lot! Made it harder as I was initially swaying towards the Galaxy...that screen is something else!
edit: can the Desire do the swipe feature, where you drag your finger to spell words? Does it work as well as on the galaxy? What is the auto correction like when typing stuff out? I have spent the last few years with a physical keyboard so am somewhat worried about going to a full touchscreen, even though i didn't have any problems with the galaxy swipe.
edit2: Can you tether it to a laptop/broadcast wifi with it?
edit3: I've had the HTC home screen (clock & weather layout) for the best part of 4 years and I'm a bit fed up of it. Is there any software package out there that looks like the galaxay homescreen? Or would it have to be through a ROM?
edit4: Are there any versions of the above phones with a physical keyboard?
Thinks thats all for now!

Desire Z will have a hardware keyboard
For the setup on the home screen, there are a number of different launchers you can use to change the appearance
Swype? I have seen apk's floating around XDA but no idea if they will work, other than that it's awesome after the lag fix (try the wm one then think better )
Tethering... yes on both IIRC, depends on tariff though
Swype is available for all android phones.
Tethering is part of the firmware AIFK.
Launcher pro lets you change from the sense to a different launcher
I've got two colleagues who have the galaxy S and they regret it and are considering getting the desire that I have. The first person has had her phone replaced twice due to overheating and the latter has had their phone replaced because it doesn't hold a charge.
